I am researching a Catherine Kendrigan who was murdered in Loughrea in 1853. Her murderer was subsequently captureed and hung for his crime. None of the newspaper accounts, of the murder, I have been able to access from Australia provide the names of Catherine's parents. If anyone could provide me with this information I would be extremely grateful.

  • Hi there,

I'm afriad I cannot give you a direct answer in relation to Catherines parents (I remember coming across that article a few years ago), but i can give you same names that may help you piece the jigsaw together.

The parish of Kiltullagh Killimordaly is fortunate to have the 1821 Census, one of a handful that survived. There is one Kindrigan family named on it in the townland of Carakeel, which is now spelt Carrowkeel it runs along to Bookeen which would join up with Dunsandle and the parish of Kilconieran on its doorstep.

I have records here that spell Kendrigan as Kindrigan, Kindreagan and Kindregan.

    1821 Cenus of Kilitullagh Killimordaly

    Carakeel (Glannanulty)

    Kindrigan             John                      39           Labourer

                              Bridget                Sister               46           Flax spinner

    approx. 1854 Griffith's Valuation

    Kendrigan Andrew Parish Kiltullagh
    Kendrigan Thomas Parish Kilconierin
    Kendrigan Andrew Parish Lickeerig

(as well as quite a few with same surname in Parish of Athenry)

You have probably already checked the 1901 Census

  • If you can access the British newspapers, there are several articles about Catherine's murder. When he was found guily John Hurley declared that he would have satisfaction of the jury and the prosecutors "either in this world or the next". However before he was hung at Galway he acknowledged his guilt and apoligised for his comments at the trial and asked the people to pray for him.

If you cannot access the newspapers let me know and i will try to attach a copy.

Good luck with researching your side of the family.
