I am interested to contact any members with a Wall in their family. I know a good deal about James and John but wonder if there are other Walls around?

Thanks

Welcome back to Ireland Reaching Out!

Hopefully, someone with Wall connections will see your post and comment. I looked at prior messages involving the surname Wall and saw one from early 2016 which you made a comment to the poster. I looked at the online Irish phone book which is only a partial list of phone users and there were no Walls near Loughrea.

The 1911 census showed one Wall family in Loughrea. Not sure how they connect to you.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Hi Ross

The 1842 Loughrea record lists John's parents as Dermot Wall and Maria Gorman.

Do you have a copy of the emigration record?

  • Thank you Roger for your comments.

Yes I checked the phone book several years ago and could not find any Walls. I did meet an elderly woman in Loughrea several years ago whose maiden name was Wall and it would seem she was the only living person in Loughrea who was born a Wall. Sady she dies a few years back. It would well be her family who were recorded in the 1911 census.

Our branch of the family were living in Ennistymon, County Clare in 1855 and immigrated to New Zealand in 1874.

Had thought of a DNA test but have done nothing so far. Thanks to you maybe I will.

    Again thank you.

    Ross

    Dear Gerlish.

    Thank you for your reply.

The only Wall male born in Loughrea around 1842 was a John Wall but his parents names do not appear on the baptisimal records. One of the witneeses was a Mary Gorman. So I am interested in the one you have found.

No I do not have a record of their immigration record in fact I am not sure what that is and where it can be found?

But I do have the ships record of their voyage from Gravesend to New Zealand in 1874.

    Regards and thanks.

  • Hi Tom. My GG Grandfather was born in Ballinakill in 1809 being 29 years after your Murtaugh was born. So Murtaugh could be James' father or uncle but of course, we shall never know. I have written a book about my Irish ancestors. The ebook version is free of charge so feel free to check it out if you are interested. Regards. Ross Wall (Sydney, Australia)
