Hi I'm coming to Loughrea next weekend 3rd June for a weeks holiday, and bringing my parents with me. We are going to try to get further with our family tree. We can but hope. Here's what I have so far. William Martin Burke born circa 1817/1818 in Loughrea. Ended up in London England getting married, and on his wedding certificate it said that his father is called Thomas Burke, and that Thomas Burke's profession was "Gentleman". I believe that this means that he was a man of distinction / well to do? Anyway the only birth record that I could find with a William Martin Burke born to father named Thomas Burke in Loughrea was on roots Ireland, and the church baptism record said born on 10 October 1816, baptised 12 oct 1816 which was earlier than I expected, but possible I guess, and that he was a Roman Catholic. On here it said that the mothers name was Mary Lynch. Nowhere can I find a marriage between a Thomas Burke and a Mary lynch. I am beginning to wonder if this family was anything to do with Burke's of Marble hill? Seeing as he was classed a gentleman, and I also know that Marble hill had its own chapel, and so I'm wondering if maybe they got married there? Long shot and probably grabbing at straws! Does anyone know the family history for Marble hill? Or details from the chapel there? Ideas of where to look when we come over next week? Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Hi,

There is guy who has written a number of Books in this area, called Gerry Kearney.    He lives at Oranmore, Co Galway, not far from Loughrea.   I think he is also on facebook at Gerry Kearney Books.   You could contact him and see if he can help.    If I get a number for him I will let you have it.

  • Dear Lorraine W:

Unfortunately, we have not been able to get hold of our local volunteer, but do have someone who may be able to help.  She is away at the moment, but will answer your query when she returns in mid-June.

In the meantime, I have sent your message to a member of the Loughrea Historical Society to see if he can be of any assistance.

Will you message me on:  jhalloranryan@irelandxo.com and I will share his details with you?

Many thanks for your interest in Ireland Reaching Out!

    All the best,

    Jane
