I am a bit confused about getting info on Loughrea, Galway. I seem to be attached to Parish Oughterard. My family lived and attended the Cathederal in Loughrea. Is there a group for that parish? Not sure where Oughterard is located. I have not been able to get into my account for months because a mix up of passwords. I probably have 4 at this point.

I do enjoy getting the newsletter and hearing about this project.

Easy to get to.  It is on a main road.  I went there last year and wished I had spent more time.  My maternal gradmother family is from there.  O'Connor and Connelly

  • Well you are in the right place now. Why don't you leave some family details here about what you know about your family connections to Loughrea and we'll see what we can do for you.  Mike

  • Hi Mike, Thanks for contacting me. I know some of the family history, but a lot is still not known.

My grandfather was Patrick J Connolly, b. July, 1887 in Coorbaum Loughrea188.he emigrated to the USA about 1905.

He was son of John J Connolly (1849-1935) m. Bridget Egan b.1854, Clonlee, dau of Patrick Egan& Mary Kilcar of Clonlea.

John Connolly was previously m. to  Margaret McGann dau. of Martin McGann of Kilchreast, Ballyshea.B. 1858. M. 2/1881. Hearsay is that John & Margaret went to NY after they married. Margaret  died after their child Mary A. Connolly was born in 1883.in IRL. Mary lived with John & Bridget for a while in Coorbaun & emigrated to Boston, 1905.

John Connolly & Bridget Egan had children: Patrick (1887), Catherine(1888), Elizabeth(1890), Joseph (1892) Anne(1893) & John( 1899).  They all lived at the family home in Coorbaun. John m. Ellen Plower & had sons Jerome & Noel (b. 1940). Jerome Connolly still lives in Coorbaun & still maintains the farm there & I have visited with both of them. Neither know much about their family history. I have didcovered more than they knew.

I am interrested in finding records of where Patrick Connolly (b 1887) was born,(possibly Tuam)his parents, etc.He worked for Patrick Kennedy in Tuam and moved to Coorbaun to work his land. He married Mary Duane from Loughrea,  (family lived on the main road between Courbaun & the cemetary at Bullan, where they are all buried. Would like to find any records on the Duane family. They were married Nov 1, 1841 in Loughrea. Had children John J (1849) Michael (1852) & Mary (1855) who married John Farrell. Michael never married & worked at the Farrell Blacksmith shop.

I have obtained some birth certificates, marriage & death from Woodford Heritage Center.  I realize that a lot of records do not exist but, I am still chasing brick walls. My father knew his family came from Galway but, he never had any contact on his fathers family after the father emigraed.

    Thanks for your help.

  • Hi Jeanne.

Can you clarify the paragraph about the Duane family?  I got confused about which couple got married in 1841, and how they relate to Mary who married Patrick Connolly.

I remember that there was another post from months ago about the Dewine/Duane family from Loughrea.  At that time we couldn't help much, and thought the family name might have been Devine before it was Americanized.  Devine is much more common, but it would be really neat if you actually found where the Duane family was from.  It might help this other person, and I'll go back to older posts and see if I can't find it and see if it relates to your family.

    Thank you!

  • Sorry Jeanne... I just realized that Patrick Connally who married Mary Duane are the couple who got married in 1841... their son John J was your grandfather's father.  What threw me was the date "1887" that you had typed, but you really mean "1803-1911" as I found an earlier post.

  • Jeanne, I think you need to post this information at this parish on IRO:  http://www.irelandxo.com/group/bullaun-new-inn

I kept thinking about your comment on your family attending mass at the Cathedral.  It wasn't built until the turn of the century (the cornerstone was laid in 1897), so you grandfather Patrick might have gone there, but HIS parents/grandparents wouldn't have.  So, I "googled" the Bullaun Church, and found this website for the Clonfert Diocese:  http://www.clonfertdiocese.ie/html/newinn.asp

They talk about when that church was built, and I've copied it here: This is now widely known as the parishes of New Inn and Bullaun. It was formerly known as Bullaun, Killaan and Grange. It is not known for certain when New Inn church (pictured left) was erected - most probably after 1855 when Fr. Headd became parish priest. The old Bullaun church of Saint Patrick was built in the 18th century, the generous benefactors being the staunchly Catholic Dolphin family of Turoe. the present newly-built church was officially opened in May 1972.

That parish would be able to help tie up any loose ends on the Connolly family after Patrick and Mary Duane got married and lived on the farm near Coorbaun.  The films available for the Bullaun Church don't start until 1827, so even if Patrick was born there, you probably won't be able to find that record.  But if they got married in Loughrea in 1841 (if Mary was from there) then they would have gotten married at The Abbey, and those records are now maintained at the Loughrea Cathedral offices.  So, I understand now why you want to post on the Loughrea Parish page here, as it might help find the Duane family.

I did find the earlier posting about the Dewine family, that we all thought must have been Devine, and I do remember looking into the ship manifest for Dennis Duane circa 1850 and connecting it to the Dennis Dewine that Cheryl was looking for here: http://www.irelandxo.com/group/loughrea-galway/messages/looking-records-dennis-dewine-and-mary-mitchell-circa-1826-1850

Maybe her Dennis was a relative of your Mary.

Sorry I couldn't have been more help.

  • Hi Jeanne,

Please be aware Coorbaun is in Clostoken-Kilconierin parish. Do you know what townland the Duanes were from?

  • Hi Jeanne,

I just joined so I hope I know what to do here...

My great-great grandfather was Michael Duane. He came to the US in 1848 and settled in New York City. I have gathered some information about him and found that he was born in 1824 and came from Carrabane, Loughrea. According to his bank records (from about 1865) his parents were named John and Kate, he had a brother John (b. 1827) who also lived in NYC, and three sisters, Mary, Kate and Jane (?) who still lived in Ireland. (The records from the Emigrants Bank are written in longhand and not always easy to read, but this is what I think they say.)

I wonder if these are the same Duane family.
