I received a message from Sakdolan about the Duane. As far as I know, the Duane family lived in Bullan.

The marriage of Patrick Connolly & Mary Duane is listed in church records, District of Carrabane on 1 Nov, 1841.

Would this be any more help?

  • Hi Jeanne,

Given the marriage takes place in the Bride's parish this confirms that Mary as well as Patrick was from Kilconierin-Clostoken (formerly known as Carrabane parish, http://www.irelandxo.com/group/kilconieron-clostoken-galway). You mentioned that the Duanes lived on the road to Bullaun, all of this is actually in Kilconierin-Clostoken. Indeed, one does not enter Bullaun parish, until you hit Bullaun townland and cemetery itself. Therefore, the Duanes lived in Lackalea townland which bordered Coorbaun (i.e. the Duanes and Connollys were Neighbours), hence the marriage takes place in their own parish church.

Thomas Duane (1825 Tithe) and (likely his son) James Duane (1855 GV) were small farmers holding 8 acres. Thanks to the GV maps, we can plot where the Duane house was (the postal address is Larchill, Lackalea, Loughrea, Co Galway) and next time you're over you'll be able to trace same. Am not surprised though they are buried in Bullaun as this was common and some of my own family are buried in neighbouring parishes (where people's homes were near the border).

I note that James Duane is listed in Lot 2 (the area in the north of the townland known as Larchill) when the land came before the Encumbered Estates Court in 1852 as part of the Clarke estate. The family may also have contributed to the 'Clostoken and Kilconierin' Irish Parliamentary Fund in 1895 (Freemans Journal, 20/06/1895), though alas the dissention in the party by then was irreversable. You can also find the remainder of the Duane family (Honoria, Mary, Delia and James) on the 1901 and 1911 census.

    Steve.

P.S. All of the above means you have to cheer for Kilconierin in Hurling (and not Loughrea or Sarsfields)!!
