I am in search of information about my great grandfather John Joseph Flynn born Jan 6, 1873 in County Galway.  I know that he came to the United States when he was 11.  I believe that the ship was called the Cephalonia and it arrived May 19, 1884 in Boston Massachusetts.  His parents were John Flynn (born about 1836) and Mary Flanagan (born about 1842 in Loughrea)  Some of his siblings (not sure it it is all) are Thomas, Teresa, Catherine, Patrick, Winifred, Edward and Ellen.  This is as far back as I go and I am unsure of searching In Ireland.  I would really appreciate some direction or if anyone has knowledge of this family I would love to know what you know.

One additional piece of information:  His mother died in 1894 and it is rumored that his father was so homesick that he went back to Ireland and that is where he died.  Thank you.

  • Hi Sherri

There is a marriage record of John Flynn and Mary Flanagan in Galway in 1858 on www.ireland.ie/

    http://ifhf.rootsireland.ie/quis.php?page=1&confirmPageView=Y

The site charges to view records but this will have the parish and MAYBE their parents' names.

I managed to get the parish and it is Loughrea RC so looks promising!

The record MAY have the bride & groom's ages also.

There are only 6 birth/baptism records of the children:

    Teresa 1860 Marie-Catherine 1863 Patrick 1867 Patrick 1867 John Joseph 1873 John Joseph 1873

All are from Loughrea RC; I'm not sure why there are 2 of the same name and year. Either they are duplications or there were 2 couples of this name giving children the same name.

There are quite a few John Flynn birth/baptism records around 1836; there are 5 in 1836 + - 2 years and one is from Loughrea RC

Again, this MAY have his parents' names.

I'm afraid your ancestors had very common names as there are 6 Mary Flanagan 1832  + - 2 years baptism records in Loughrea!!

Similarly there are 42 John Flynn deaht / burial records in Galway on rootsireland.ie

I searched the ones 1900 + - 6 years & found 1 in Loughrea Civil Parish but he was 75 when he died in 1896.

I also have a cd Memorials of the Dead in Mayo & Galway & there are some Flynns in Spiddal & Ross Abbey cemeteries; I'm not sure if they are relevant to your line
