I am seeking information on my Great Granddad Michael Joseph Kelly.  His Army Pension Records say that he was born in August 1834 in Loughrea.  He enlisted at Bradford, Yorkshire England in the 1st Battalion of 18th Foot Royal Irish Regiment on 24 November 1854.  He married whilst in the Regiment stationed in India on 3 May 1963 in Trimulgerry, India to an army widow Mary Ann Burkett (nee Doheny) on their marriage lines it says his father's name is Joseph.  He was discharged on Army Pension in 1877 and lived the remainder of his life in England with  his wife and family.

I would like to know if there is a Parish record of his birth and hopefully giving name of his parents and any siblings.  I can find no ships record of Michael Joseph Kelly coming to England whether on his own or with his parents and wonder did he just come over to Bradford to join the Army I cannot find any census showing him living in England before he joined the Army.  I would be grateful for any help at all.  Thanks.

    There are 9 Michale Kelly birth/baptism records in Galway 1834 on www.rootsireland.ie/

    8 of them are from West Galway leaving 1 in East - in which is Loughrea. Unfortunately the East record is from TYNAGH RC parish.

    The Galway parish map shows Tynagh & Loughrea are close but not adjoining

    I searched again for records 1836 + - 2 years and there were 3 matches in Loughrea so there's a choice of 4 now! (The addition of the middle name didn't help unfortunately)

    There was none with father Joseph I'm afraid

    These very common names are tricky!

    At times like this you go to ancestry.com in the hope that someone might have done the tree for you.

    As you are probably aware there are 13 public member trees all with Michael Joseph Kelly born 1836 Loughrea with father Joseph Kelly (born 1812 but no place or source given); some have mother Isabella. I couldn't find any siblings with these parents either.

    I searched rootsireland for children of Joseph Kelly with no mother's name Galway 1834 + - 20 years and got 19 matches! Only 3 were from Loughrea however: Catherine 1849 Anne 1832 and Mary 1830 - possible siblings

    No luck on Family Search
