I have spent a considerable amount of time researching the origins of my great, great grandmother Mary Dooley who arrived in Western Australian in April 1853 on a ship called the "Palestine". The passenger list of the "Palestine" shows that there were about 35 other Irish girls on this ship which has led to it being called a brideship. My research shows that a number of these girls came from East Galway and I am now led to believe that this is where "my Dooleys" are from. I have information about these girls and what became of them in Australia, however I would love to know where they came from in Galway (and in particxular which parish my gr, gr grandmother was from), how they came to be selected for emigration as a group and if they were in a convent/poor house/orphanages. If there is anyone interested in looking into this further or if you have any suggestions of where I can find this type of information I would love to hear from them.

Many thanks for your time and congratulations on a wonderful initiative.

Kind regards,

Anne Gribble

  • Hi Anne

Do you have any additonal information on Mary Dooley. That surname is very common in the East Galway area.

Looking at the date she left, would suggest it was just after the famine period. She may have got " Assisted payment - for emigration".  Some landlords/ government provided some payment for tenants to leave their estates.  I believe some large libraries have lists of names of people that would have left under this scheme.

  • Hello Anne,

while this is a very a long shot - there was a Dooly family in Clonfert parish. They were cousins according to what I have been told of a neighbouring Coen family. If the Coen name appears anywhere in your genealogy then this might be a clue. The following inscription recorded by me from a headstone in Clonfert graveyard names a Patrick, Catherine and Andrew Dooly.

I have also recorded some Dooly memorials in Eyre's Church graveyard in the village of Eyrecourt (Donanaughta parish) on which a George, John, Jane and Eleanor Dooly are commemorated.

Though the name is recorded in all of these instances as Dooly rather than Dooley.

I hope this material is at least of interest, if not of help to you.
