On the National Library webpage, you can search for baptism records for Milltown parish (Liskeevy and Addergoole) from 7th August 1858 onwards.Apart from these online records, do other paper records for baptisms exist for earlier than this?

I had assumed until today that if the records did not appear on the National Library website, they did not exist. However today I came across reference to Catholic Church baptism records in 1818 for a historical person in Clifden parish, even though the National Library website has online records for baptisms only from 7th January 1838.

Therefore I assume there are paper records somewhere for Clidfen parish that are not available online at the National Library website. If there is an exception with Clifden parish, I thought maybe there might also be paper records available somewhere for Milltown parish. Id so where are they and who can gain access to them?

I am particularly interested in baptisms in the 1836 to 1842 timeframe.

I look forward to your reply.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I don't believe there are any records available prior to 1858 for Milltown. I checked my resource book-"A Guide to Irish Parish Registers" by Brian Mitchell and he shows the earliest records for the parish are 1858. I also checked Roots Ireland and they also show 1858.

You are correct that some parishes do have records earlier than what is shown on the NLI site.. The NLI microfilmed parish records back in the early 1950s. These microfilm recors were digitized and made available online. I think in some situations the parish discovered earlier records than what was provided to NLI. Later when the Heritage Centers (Roots Ireland) started transcribing the parish records  they used all the records including those not sent to NLI.

  • Hi Roger,

Thank you. Am I right therefore in thinking that if it is not on NLI and not on rootsireland then it does not exist?

Another question after I posted the original question. Where are Milltown Church records for 1881 onwards? Are they available? I am interested in a marriage that took place in Milltown in 1884. The record I received yesterday from GRO was not the original handwritten record, but a transcription.

Yes, not on NLI or Roots then it does not exist.

Milltown records up to 1900 are on Roots but these are transcribed records taken from the parish register. The actual register would be in Milltown.

I'm surprised GRO sent you a transcribed record and not a copy of the original. Since the marriage was in 1884, you can access the record at this site www.irishgenealogy.ie

  • Roger,

Irishgenealogy.ie only gives minimal information online for marriages in 1884, and not the original image.

The transcription I got recently has all the information, but it also seems to have some interpretation of handwriting, which might be wrong. I really wanted to get the original so that I am not at the mercy of someone else's reading of handwriting.

    Thanks

Can you provide me with the names of the couple who married in 1884? www.irishgenealogy.ie has the actual records for marriages starting in 1882.

  • Attached Files

    Roger,

I will upload the files. The one with the minimal information (and has no image) is from irishgenealogy.ie. The other one is the file I received from GRO recently. It has all the information, but it is not a copy of the original handwritten register.

    Thank you for your assistance

I would write back to GRO and ask why you did not get a copy of the actual record. There gave you all the pertinent info from the record.

I'm assuming there is some issue with the records from the Tuam registration district for that time period. They don't show the image on www.irishgenealogy.ie and Roots Ireland only has access to the index record shown on www.irishgenealogy.ie

  • For the record, I have received a reply from GRO. The quality of the original was poor, so they sent the complete transcription instead. However with a bit of persuasion I got them to send the original also.
