William Ruane was born sometime around 1790 to 1795 time frame.  He had four boy and one girl that I know of.  His wife was Mary Coen, and his children were Patrick (my G Grandfather), Denis, William and Malachy.  The sister, was named Mary, and I expect that there were more sisters, I just can't find data to prove it.  I know the family was in West Cuddoo, near Monivea, when the Children were born.  My father knew this, but I was able to prove it by Death Records here in the states.  Patrick Rowan's death record clearly shows he was born in Cuddoo, and who his Parents were.  I have also found William (Patrick's Father) listed in Griffithin's Valuation, with his cousin Michael.  There is also a Mary listed, but I am unsure of who's Mother this may be.  The family Plot is in Clonkeenkerrill Cemetey, just north of Colmenstown as I remember.

Part of the family at this point in time used the surname Roane.

In 1851, Henry Hall owned West Cuddoo, and I expect that my family rented from him.  Before 1851, this land was part of the Burke Estate, and I expect that my family rented from the Burkes. I have seen that most of the Burke and Hall Estate Records burned in the great Archive fire of 1922.

My Question, to anyone that may be able to help me, is this: I know that the Parish records do not go back before 1850, so that will not help me trace the family before then.  What records are still available that may help me trace the family back in time, before 1830?  I know that there are Land Court records and Probate records that go back to the mid 1700's.  Could these be of use, when trying to trace Genealogy.

According to family history, from three different branches of the family (that did not know each other), our family came from Rouen, France as Oarsmen.  The trip was made sometime in the 1600's. and the surname at that point in time was something close to de Roane or de Rowan.  Would it be likely that they came to Galway City, and then moved to the Monivea area?  Would a family like this most likely have been of the Normans?  I would expect a DNA test to be in order, to narrow down the families roots.

Thanks for any direction or input,

Best regards,

Fred.

  • Hi Fred

I couldn't find any of the children or the parents' marriage record on www.rootsireland.ie/

However the Tithe Applotments (free at http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/) have 42 Ruanes in Galway including 9 in Monivea in 1827

There are also 63 Ruanes in Galway in the 1821 Irish Census in Galway (free at http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/)

  • Hi Col,

Thanks for the reply, and I have run into the same problem as you, William does not show up in any of those.

In the 1821 Census, Cuddoo is not included, and the same goes for the Tithe Applotments.

Would you know what records are still available that may help me trace the family back in time, before 1830?  I know that there are Land Court records and Probate records that go back to the mid 1700's.  Could these be of use, when trying to trace Genealogy?

    Thanks,

  • Hi again Fred

I'm no expert in the records you mentioned but I tried the Registry of Deeds at http://irishdeedsindex.net/ but there's only 1 Ruane in Tipperary in 1848 - Rev Charles

    There is also 1 Roane - a pewterer - 1714 in Dublin

In the Landed Estates http://landedestates.nuigalway.ie/ there are no Rouanes or Ruanes listed - only Roughnane/Ronan & Roughan and the records only talk about Griffiths.

    Would dna testing help?
