Hello

I am seeking information about Thomas Coleman born c 1805 possibly near Moylough , son of Thomas Coleman and Catherine (surname unknown.) He married at Menlough(?) 1828 to Catherine Kean(e)/Cain(e) born c1812 Moylough. Catherine was apparently a daughter of Bridget Gowan and someone Kean'Cain.

They had at least 10 children before emigrating to Victoria, Australia in 1853. Two of the children, Timothy (aged 22) and Luke (aged 1), died probably in Ireland before they left.

Any information very much appreciated.

Moylough civil parish sits just to the north of Killoscobe parish (which includes Menlough). I looked at Roots Ireland and they do have the 1828 marriage record for Thomas and Catherine in the Menlough RC records. Roots is a pay site to see the transcription of the church record.

The Moylough baptismal records on Roots do not start until 1848 which is probably after the children were born.

I did look at the 1856 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Moylough parish just to see where any Colemans were listed. There were five listed in Moyloughbeg, Annaghmore East and Annaghmore West townlands. Possibly Thomas and his family lived in one of those townlands.

    Hi Catherine

Sponsors at the marriage of Thomas Coleman and Catherine Kean in Menlough were Michael Kelly and Jane Moran

There is a baptismal record for Peter Coleman in Moylough records with date 12 Apr 1850 Parents are listed as Thomas and M Coleman

Sponsors are Michael Kean and Catherine Kean and it lists their address as Springlawn I would suspect that these are yours and the M is a typo and should be K or C

There are no other Coleman-Kean baptisms in Moylough unfortunately

As the marriage usually was in the bride's church I would say that Catherine was possibly from Menlough and I may have a family connection

There was only 1 family (as far as I am aware) of Keane's in the area

My great great gran was Bridget Keane who married Michael Mellody in Menlough in 1834 Her brother was Michael and he appears in the Griffiths in Derryglassaun : http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/moylough.htm

This may be the sponsor of Peter ???

Let me know what you think

  • Hi Martin

Thank you very much for the information. I don't have any record of a Peter - ten children are mentioned on both Thomas and Catherine's death certificates (both deceased and alive) but no Peter. However certificates are not always accurate.

Thomas and Catherine left from Liverpool in 1853 for Australia.

Do you know who your ancestor Bridget Kean's parents were?

    Many thanks

    Catherine

  • Hi Catherine

    They were in Derrylissane, Menlough

This is the grave of Michael Keane http://www.irishgraveyards.ie/plot.php?plotno=24&yardid=249&section=Chu…

Michael's daughter Kate 1869-1939 went to Australia and died in Perth Not sure who she went out to or why She married William McQuoid and had one son Edward James

Do you have a tree on ancestry or equivalent ? Would be worth seeing the names of the other children

I will see if any locals know of the name in the area that Roger mentioned

My email address is martinjcurley@gmail.com if you want to contact me by that means as its a easier to share info
