Hi

This is my first post on here so apologies if it seems vague. I am desperately trying to trace my great grandfathers birth in Ireland and how he came to migrate to India.

His name is Micheal Corbett (may have a middle name starting I or J), father I believe is Thomas as marriage record for Michael says Ths. He would have been born around the mid 1830s and I always thought he was from Cork., but recent DNA matches have linked me to a Mortimer Joseph Corbett born 1842 in Oranmore, Mortimer had a father named Thomas but I can find no Michael amongst his siblings. Mortimer migrated to Australia prior to 1870, Michael migrated to India but I am not really sure when, I believe he worked for the East India Company on the railway and may also have served in the army... there is also a family tale of him leaving Ireland to plant tea in India

Would be great to hear from anyone who can throw any light on this or indeed from any Corbetts still residing in the area, I imagine I have relatives there somewhere

Thanks for your time if you have read this, my fingers are crossed now

The baptismal records for Oranmore start in March 1833  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0634   so it is possible that Michael was born just before March 1833 and therefore no records would be available. On the subscription site Roots Ireland I do see four baptismal records for children of Thomas Corbett and Bridget Bird:

Mary 1834 Murtagh 1836 Murtagh 1842 (the 1836 Murtagh would have died young) Thomas 1850  The 1842 Murtagh is the Mortimer that you found in other records. By the way, there was an annotation on one of the baptismal record transcriptions that Bridget Bird was originally Bridget Burke but the family changed their surname?

  • Good morning Roger

Thankyou so much for your reply, I do apologise for the long delay in my responding. Yes, my Michael was very likely born just before 1833, he's proved very elusive throughout his life. Would the churches have paper records before 1833 that have not yet been put on microfilm? Just wondering if it's worth me trying to find the relevant church when I next visit the area?

    Kind regards

No, Oranmore would not have any earlier records before 1833. All the best!
