I'm looking for information regarding Winifred Mulkare (possibly Kerry or Carey) Larkin, 1826 to about 1904 or so.  I believe she died in Portumna, County Galway.  I believe her father's name was James Larkin and her mother's name was Nanzi Davis.  I believe she had approx. 13 children and am most interested in her daughter, also named Winifred, who married Michael Doyle some time around 1859.  I would be requesting information regarding Michael Doyle (my husband's great-grandfather) and his wife, Winifred, but I don't know where in Ireland they are from.

We will be visiting Galway from June 5th through June 8th.  Would it be helpful for us to visit a church or a county agency for more information?

These are the names I have, although, like I said, I don't know if they're from County Galway or not.  Any information you can give me would be most appreciated.

  • Michael Doyle - 1826 - 1904
  • Michael Doyle's mother: Jane Doyle - 1802
  • Michael Doyle's father if you have any information available

I can't thank you enough for you help.  Thanks very much!

Do you have any other details of any other part of Ireland some of your ancestors may be from ?

  • Hi Patricia,

The following is the reply I have recieved from the Woodford Heritage Centre it certainly seems to contain some answers to your queries. Regards Bill.

    Dear Bill,

Thank you for your email and telephone call on the 28th May 2013.

In your email you stated that you were looking for information on a
Winifed Mulkare (possibly Kerry or Carey) Larkin who died in Portumna
about 1904 born to parents James Larkin and a Nanzi Davis.

I failed to note a state death record of a Winifred Larkin within the
Portumna area around that time frame, we hold state death records for
the district of Portumna from 1864 ? 1907 see attached list for your
    information.

However, I noted a Winifred Mulhare or variant and a Laurence Larkin
having children within the Roman Catholic parish of Portumna: Helen,
Edward, Mary, Margaret, Thomas and Mary: 1830 ? 1841. I am unsure if
these records are of interest to you.

You also outlined a Michael Doyle born 1826 -1904 and that his
mother?s first name was Jane. The Woodsworth Disctionary of first
names explains that Jane is a variant of old Scottish Gaelic, often
anglicized as Shona, Sinead (Irish Gaelic), Jane, Jean, Jeanne, Joan,
Joanna, Joanne, Johanna. Based on this information I conducted a
search of our entire database system and noted the following:
Church baptism records of children born to a Michael Doyle and Johanne
Larkin within the Roman Catholic parish of Loughrea and Portumna: John
1825 and Bridget 1827 (born in Loughrea), Ellen 1831, Patrick and
Michael 1835 (born in Portumna). I also noted a state death record
of a Michael Doyle (Doctor in Medicine) in Portumna 1889. I am unable
to confirm if these are relevant to you.

Should Ms. Patricia Doyle wish to visit our centre when in Ireland
from 5th to 8th June 2013 please book in advance so that we will give
her priority during her stay. Our office hours are Monday to
Thursday 9.30am to 4.30pm and on Friday from 9.30am to 12.30pm.
    Telephone No: 090 9749309.
