I am looking for links to my Great Grandfather Patrick Finnigan.  I have the UK 1911 Census for Cheadle (Cheshire) on which he is listed as being born in "Tuam Galway Ireland".  His age is given as 33 which would give a birth date of around 1878.

I also have his 1903 Marriage certificate (24th Dec 1903) from Salford (Manchester) where his age is given as 25.  His father is listed as James Finnigan (Deceased).

On both the census and certificate Patricks trade is given as "Farm labourer" as is his father on the marriage certificate.

Unfortunately my grandfather didnt really know his father as he passed away when he was 4.

I have no other leads on this family line and hope that some records do exist that will help me continue looking down this path.

I searched the civil birth index records for the Tuam registration district and could not locate a possible birth record for Patrick. The closest was 1882 and the search included the normal variants for Finnigan. I also checked Roots Ireland www.rootsireland.ie and there were no births in 1878. Again the closest was 1882 and the father of that Patrick was not James.

It is possible that he was born somewhere else in Galway and then moved to Tuam.

Do you know his mothers maiden name or any names of siblings?

  • Hi Roger,

Sorry for my delay in replying.

I have no other leads, I was hoping this was a good one as I have a lot of other Irish ancestors going off in different branches and from all the Census returns so far this was the only one which was so specific on the place of birth.  Usually it just states "Ireland".

I guess he could have lived in the rural area around in order that Tuam was the nearest large town...or as you say moved there when he was young, other than that I am stumped, unless something more turns up.

    Thanks for your efforts!

    Tim.

I took a further look at the Tuam registration which covers almost 20 civil parishes. Ironically, the actual parish of Tuam is half in Tuam registration district and the northern/easterm part of the parish is in the Glenamaddy registration district. I expanded the search and found an 1879 Patrick Finigan birth record in the Glenamaddy district. Mayne a shot in the dark but I wanted you to be aware of the record. Copies of records can be obtained from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. If you want to go that route let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Hi Roger,

    Thanks again for your help.

I am going to take a trip back to Manchester soon and will go look for the grave of Patrick Finnigan.

I hope that might give a name of the Mother or siblings.....will see if it brings some more details for the search.
