Wonder if anyone can help me. I have very strong ancestral links with Tynagh, dating back to the early to mid 19th century. My great grandmother Mary Loftus nee Grady was born in Tynagh. Mary's mother Bridget Grady nee Cunningham was another of my ancestors to be born and married in Tynagh.
I also have a Loftus connection to Tynagh. My 2x great grandfather was married there and two of his children were born there. I have been looking for the Gradys in both the Tithe Applotment Books and Griffith valuation. I have pinpointed the townland of Mittagh, but I have been unable to locate it on maps etc. Is anyone here familiar with this townland name? Does it still exist? Thank you.

Hello Danget,
You seem to have accomplished a lot in your searches and covered all the bases. All that I can suggest is to look at www.askaboutireland.ie and click on the griffith valuation. You will find a seearch bar in blue that highlights options for searching placenames. The only other place I can think of looking is www.logainm.ie. You can translate this page into english on top righthand corner. This site deals exclusively with placenames.

Based on my reading of the Tithe, I think the townland you want would be Garraunnameetagh. The Tithe records show Gurraun Mittagh which evolved into Garraunnameetagh by the Griffiths http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/galway/tynagh.htm
The townland is to the north of Tynagh village. If you have Google Maps you should be able to see the location.
