I am looking for information concerning my great great grand parents James White and Mary Spillane.  I have not located a record of their marrage. They resided on a farm located in Ashill (Ash Hill) in the late 1800s.  They both appear on the 1901 census.  James' age is listed 80 and Mary's as 79.

Mary died in 1902. Her death certificate reflect's her age as 84.  James in not listed on the 1911 census, however repeated searches for his death record at the GRO were negative.

I have not been able to locate birth records for either James or Mary who were both RC.

Also residing at the Ashill farm were James and Mary's adult daughter Margaret White, her husband Patrick Spillane, born in 1865 in Killorglin, and their seven children.  Margaret died in 1944 and her death record reflects her age as 79.

Any information concerning birth, marriage and death dates / records of my ancestors would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

  • Statutory recording of births and of RC marriages started in Ireland in 1864, so you won?t find either a statutory birth or marriage certificate for James & Mary. (Given their dates of birth, they probably married in the 1840s).

Prior to 1864 church records can sometimes provide the information you are looking for, but in this case the Ballymacelligot parish records don?t start until 1868. There are no records before that date and so it seems unlikely that you?ll trace either their births or their marriage. (At least from church records anyway).

You can see what RC church records exist from this link:

Griffiths Valuation for 1853 records a James White and a Robert White both with households in Ash Hill. However there were no White households in the tithes in 1824, suggesting the family moved to Ash Hill between those dates.

  • Hi Chris

    There is a site www.irishgenealogy.ie

On it I found a couple of birth/baptism records of Mary Spillane in Kerry

The problem is knowing the month of her death year as if she had had a birthdaythat year her birth year was 1818 but if she hadn't it was 1817; i've attached both to your email address.

No luck for James 1820 but there are a few in 1821

No marriage record that I could see but you might want to check for yourself.

Kerry records aren't on www.rootsireland.ie so no joy there!
