Hello, I was hoping someone might know where the Quirke family from Coomasaharn may be buried.  I understand there are differnt Quirke families, but I'm hoping the following information might help.

My great grandparents, John Sullivan and Mary Quirke left Coomasaharn in 1900, traveling to Scotland and then to Brooklyn NY.  I don't know much about John Sullivan except that he was born in 1882 (near Caragh Lake).

Mary Quirke was born in 1880 in Coomasaharn to Patrick Quirke (1837 --1925) and his wife Mary (nee Hussey) (1845 --1923.)

Patrick and Mary's other children (Mary's siblings), who remained in Ireland were:

Michael Quirke (b 1877, married Moynahan) and had 5 children John, Martin, Michael, Thomas and Nora Quirke

John Quirke (b 1881), I don't have any information other than that.

and Margaret Quirke (b 1884) who married Matthew (?) Murphy and had 7 children--Matthew Murphy, Patrick Murphy, William Murphy, Daniel Murphy, Brigid Murphy, Eileen Murphy and Margaret Murphy.

My great grandfather Patrick Quirke was the son of John Quirke and Anne (?) Riorden.  His siblings were Mary Riorden, Margaret Sullivan, Brigid Shea, Debra (Gobinet) Griffin, and Anne Shea.

I was in Coomasaharin a few years ago, but couldn't locate my great grandparents graves due to lack of research, the rain, and my confusion!  I'm hoping to come back within the next year with my family, and  find where Patrick and Mary are buried.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

  • The Quirkes should be buried in Ballnikilla...my family was from Kealduve Upper nearby and that's where they were buried. If you go to the site http://www.kerryburials.com you will see pictures of the gravestones. I think there is one in the old cemetery and 2 in the newer one.  Then if you go to http://www.kerrylaburials.ie/en/Index.aspx you can see the records giving age and cause of death. One more thing. I saw a moving picture of the Quirkes that was taken during the 'Glenbeigh Evictions'. I'll see if I can find it for you!

  • Hi suzrya (and crazynanao8!),

we're probably very distant relatives. My great-great-grandmother was (I'm pretty sure) Margaret Quirke from Coomsaharn, born 1842 to Thomas Quirk & Catherine Griffin. I haven't investigated this side very much though. I checked the KerryBurials site as suggested above and can only find 3 recent Quirkes, buried in the 1980s/90s, so I think that's just the "new" graveyard. I'm in Dublin, Ireland, myself and to my shame have never visited, but I plan to sometime. My other relatives are Sullivans and Powells from Ballinakilla. It was Timothy Sullivan who married the aforementioned Margaret Quirke.

  • Best We might even be (2) (Hi

My mother’s people were O’Riordan from Mountain Stage close to Coomasaharin, in Glenbeigh. I think my maternal ancestor was Margaret Quirke. My cousin Margaret Smith (whose mother was a O’Riordan) has done much research on these families. Email me and I will see if it’s ok to give you her email address. Some things you might like to know... the name is most likely O’Riordan although the o fell off many names for two reasons (1) just laziness and (2) those who accepted help from soup kitchens set up to encourage people to anglicize. Glenbeigh, not Glenbey and there are Quirkes and Cliffords and O’Riordans in Killorglin which is nearby. We might even be related!! Best wishes Tim
