Hi Everyone

I'm a newbie so I hope I am posting in the right place. I have traced my family to Killeentierna in the 1830s. Our surname is Glover and there was a considerable group of us living in the parish at that time. The men were all stonemasons who apparently came to the area to build churches. Glover is not a Kerry name and I really want to find out where they originated. Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated. Below I have posted details :

My GG Grandparents William Glover and Gobnait Brosnan. were married in Killeentierna in 1837http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/510c1c0567374William was a stonemason and according to Griffiths Valuation they were renting a house and land from Richard Meredith of Dicksgrove. There was a group of Glovers who all seemed well settled in the area:29 Mar 1829Baptism : Johanna Glover was Godmother to John Dennehy at Killeentierna (Parents – Timothy Dennehy / Catherine Riordan)11 Feb 1831Marriage at Killeentierna, Margaret Glover was witness to Patrick Keane and Mary Quinn              6 Feb 1837   Marriage: William Glover & Gobnait Brosnan (My GG Grandparents)  Witnesses – John Sullivan and Thade Danihy 3 May 1833  Baptism: Wm Glover was Godfather to Elizabeth Barry (Parents-John Barry/Eliz Horan) 9 Aug 1834 Baptism: Maria Glover was Godmother to Tim Moynihan (Parents- Dan Moynihan/Kate Crean) 12 April 1838Baptism: George Glover was Godfather to Daniel Wren(Parents-John Wren/Margaret Barry) 20 Sept 1838Baptism: Wm Glover was Godfather to Francis McDonnell (Parents Alex McDonnell/Geneva Wilson) 15 Dec 1852Baptism: William Glover was Godfather to John Barry, Ballylongford 2 Feb 1868Baptism: Peter Glover was Godfather to Michael Connor, Ballybeg, Killeentierna 19 Jul 1875Baptism: William Glover was Godfather to Catherine Quinn, Strand St, Tralee 31 May 1877Baptism: William Glover was Godfather to John Madden, High St, Killarney 25 Nov 1911 Baptism: Clounclough, Killeentierna ,Margaret Glover was Godmother to Maurice Fleming  The parish records only go back to 1803 and I took everything I could from them. You can see that the Glovers integrated well into Killeentierna Now for the difficult bit -The key to tracing back any further is a WALTER GLOVER :I found this marriage:15 Feb 1848   Mary Glover and Edmond Moriarty The bride was listed as 20 years of ageBride’s father was Walter Glover (soldier) I had a military researcher in the UK to have a look for Walter’s record. No luck there, I’m afraid. The bride was born 1828c and Walter also had a son Walter who was born in Castletownbere in 1822http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/a303e20155788

  • Hi Janglo,

I haven't checked in to this site in a while. I know that there was a George Glover in the Currans area about thirty years ago when I was growing up. Will see what I can find out about him and get back to you soon.
