Laurence CONNOR married Margaret ASH 26th April 1856 Keel Co. Kerry.

This marriage and their children (found on Ancestry) were all Baptised at Keel, Kerry. Their residence was Laughtacolla, Laughtocolla, Lachtota, Lachtacolla, Lactocolla, Laughtacollah - various different spellings.

Do you know exactly where this townland is/was? Can it be identified today? What is the accepted spelling today?

Their children were

  • John Connor b. 1858
  • Sarah Connor b. 1859
  • Charles Conor b. 1862
  • Anna Conor b. 1865
  • Timothy Connor b. 1867
  • Ellen Connor b.1871
  • Catherine Connor b. 9 Jan 1875, Laughtacolla; Birth Registered in the District of Castlemaine, District of Tralee. My Grandmother.

The family were Roman Catholic.

My Grandmother Catherine (Kathleen or Kate) b. 1875, came to New Zealand around 1895. She married Patrick McNEILL, from Co Antrim, in New Zealand in 1902.

Two of her sisters Sarah and Annie also came to New Zealand, where they were both married. Sarah O’Connor married Michael Lagan in 1884 & Annie O’Connor married John Mullan in 1896.

I wish to travel to Kerry in the near future. Would love to see where they lived and visit the cemetery. Is there any way of knowing if Laurence & Margaret are buried in the old Keel Cemetery? Are records kept of Roman Catholic Historical Headstones? I realise Laurence & Margaret’s headstones probably haven’t survived time.

Would appreciate any information you can give me on my Gt-Grandparents Laurence O’Connor and Margaret Ashe and family.

With thanks, Jackie

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

The townland is Laghtacallow in Kilgarrylander civil parish. Laghtacallow is about eight kilometers southwest of the town of Castlemaine. Use Google Maps.

Below is a 1901 census record for a Connor family in Laghtacallow. The only flaw is that the mother is living and listed as Ellen. Maybe she was the mother in law?

I also provided a link to the parish church. You may want to e-mail them about the headstones.

  • Paddy Hi,

What wonderful news! I visited Laghtacallow in Kerry last May. Had a wonderful time and met wonderful people, however none related. Visited Old Keel Cemetery where I think our ancestors would have been buried. Also the Catholic Church, St Gobnait’s at Boolteens where the family would have attended Mass. Paddy would I be able to make contact with you to find out more about our Irish family? My email is jacqueline.williams@xtra.co.nz

Thank you so much for making contact. For me this is exciting.

    Regards, Jackie Williams

My ancestors came from from Lachtacalla (as spelt on present day maps).

Their surnames were Corcoran, Dowd, Foley, Downes with some coming from nearby townlands of Boolteens, Ardabawn,

If I can be of any help let me know.

  • Hi Peter

Visited the Old Keel Cemetery in 2017 but didn’t find a headstone for Laurence & Margaret O’Connor (nee Ashe). Expect they would have been buried there. Also visited the Catholic church at Boolteens, Keel – St Gobnait’s. This I expect is where the family attended Mass.

Any information on the previous generations would be fabulous. Paddy has also provided info. Do you have any early photos? My Grandmother Catherine (Kate) was born 1875. Married in New Zealand 1902.

Peter, I appreciate you making contact – thank you.
