Michael Ashe, my husband's great-grandfather was born in Camp, Co Kerry c 1849. He joined the RIC in Tralee on 21st June 1869. According to his RIC record Sub Inspector Mc Guire (Tralee) recommended him. He was stationed in Limerick from 21st Nov 1869 and married his first wife Anne Fitzgerald, High Rd, Thomondgate, Limerick on 11th Nov 1878. His father Thomas Ashe was already deceased according to this marriage certificate. He was also stationed in Galway Queens County and Tipperary before retiring in Limerick. My husband's grandfather Thomas Ashe was born in Ballinasloe in 1881. Michael's 2nd marriage to Bridget Geeves in Dublin gives Bridget Moriarty as his mother and one of his witnesses was Jeremiah Deane from Kilgobin, Co Kerry. According to the Griffith's Valuation there was a Thomas and a Patrick Ashe along with a James and a Jeremiah Dean in the Estate of Edward F Day in Ballinknockane, in the parish of Kilgobban. There is also a grave in the CoI graveyard with the surnames Deane, Moriarty and Ashe. I have also found another child in the catholic church records in the National Library of Ireland which may be a brother of Michael. John was born at the end of 1838 to a Thomas Ashe and Bridget Moriarty. Unfortunately, the church records for Kilgobban in the NLI are not complete and are difficult to read so I need your help. I would appreciate any help that you might be able to give me - original Church Records? Edward F Day Estate Papers? Local Knowledge of Ashe and Moriarty families? Any other leads/advice?

  • Hi Brendan,

Thanks very much for this information. Our Michael must have been one of the younger children to Thomas Ashe and Bridget Moriarty. However, I think that this confirms that the Thomas Ashe in the Griffith's Valuation is more than likely to be his father. I will have to dig further, maybe in the Estate Papers/Griffith's Valuation Maps etc to find out exactly where they lived.

I believe there may be a link to Thomas Ashe, the Patriot but I'm a long way off making that connection. Maybe I'll crack it before his anniversary in 2017!

    Regards

    Marion
