I have had the good luck to find the townland where my great-grandmother came from in Kerry, and to meet living family members and see the area.  However, I don't know what parish they would have been part of in the 19th century when she was born.

I ran across my great-grandmother's birth record in a transcription of east Kerry/Cork parish records at the LDS library, called "O'Kief, Coishe Mang, Sliabh Luachra, and Upper Blackwater."  In this source, the location of her birth is listed thus:

RATHMORE WITH NOHAVAL AND KILCUMMIN,KERRY,IRELAND

She was Elizabeth Cronin, christened 16 Jun 1867, daughter of Daniel Cronin and Elizabeth Donoghue or Donohoe.  She emigrated to Worcester MA in the 1880s, probably following her brother Daniel, and married there.

The townland is called Doocarraig (there is Beg and More, she was from the More side) and today when I write to the families there, I address them in Headford.  When I met them and showed them what I'd found that led me to them, they said that as far as they know they've never been in the parish of Kilcummin, so it must be a civil parish.  Also they didn't believe they were associated with the parish of Rathmore.  They directed me to the ruins of the Killaha church and an unmarked and overgrown area of the churchyard, as the 19th and early 20th century family plot.  My great-grandmother's nephew, who died in 1992, is buried I believe in the churchyard at Lisnagrave.

If anyone knows this area and can suggest what parish I should actually join, I would appreciate it!

Do you have any more info on your Donoghue? or know of any Fitzgeralds in Kilcummin?

  • Hi, I am a dna relative of yours on Family Tree.  I am not sure which side we are actually related on or both...I see you have a lot of Cajun surnames in your tree that are also mine, so that would be my Daddy's side.  However, I found you by doing a search for Donoghue...and seems yours is from County Kerry as well.  You don't show up as a match on my mtDna, though.  My ancestor is Catherine Donoghue 1832 or 1833 - 1897.  Born in County Kerry, Ireland, and living in Algiers, New Orleans, Louisiana by the age of 12.  She married Francis "Frank" Hanratty, also from Ireland.  Anything sound familiar?  Thanks!

    Blessings,

  • Dan Joe Cronin of Shrön, Parish of Rathmore, just died last year.  Shrön is a townland in the foothills of the Paps (mountain range).  The whole area is known as Sliabh Luachra and has a long history of traditional musicians.  Dan Joe was an amateur local historian and self-published "In the Shadow of the Paps" (2001, reprinted 2009) (ISBN: 0-9541425-0-0).  Dan Joe's book is a compendium of his decades of research on Sliab Luachra.  The Blackwater is a river that runs through eastern Kerry and I believe, into Co. Cork.

My family on my Mother's side, O'Briens, came from the area around Kilcummin and into the village of Gneeveguilla, Rathmore Parish.

  • Hi,

I have connections with both Donohue/O'Donohue and Cronin in this area of Kerry.

Original poster- have you done DNA on Ancestry by any chance? Wondering if there's a relation there.

My great grandmother was Mary Ann Hartnett from County Kerry, her mom was Mary Donohue, and she immigrated to Liverpool in the early 1900's. Many relatives apparently went to Massachusetts, however.
