I am searching for information on Garrett Moynihan, born in Ireland October 1852. US census states he immigrated at the age of 17 or 20, (1869 or 1872). He lived in Glens Falls, New York most of his life and was married in Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada. On the marriage certificate his parents are listed as a Patrick Moynihan and Catherine Sears, both of Ireland. Garret Moynihan was my Great Grandfather. Family lore has it that we originate in County Kerry and before immigration, our last name was O'Moynihan.Pappa also  passed down his fond memories of living in coastal, mountainous area. Any help is greatly apprecitated!

Blessings,

Darlene Moynihan

  • Thanks Sarah,

I get the feeling this is Garretts parent's and siblings. It seems to fit quite well. I have also looked into Griffith's Valuation records and it seems that the Sears and Moynihan's were neighbors. This raises the question of where my Great Grandfather, Garrett, fits in. I wonder if he could have been born else where or perhaps was even an orphan and just listed this family as his? He immigrated in 1876 at the age of 17, the time of Fenian Uprising. I also wonder if there is a connection to that? Gosh, I wish I could go back in time and ask local townsfolk. My next step will be to look at records for his possible siblings and any immigration records for them. I suppose he would have had family or friends when he immigrated. He married in Ontario canada in1852 and listed his home as Glens Falls, NY and as a widower. There is a huge blank in records for him prior to his marriage of 1886. I feel like a puppy chasing my tail. I apprectate your help greatly.

    Thanks

    Darlene

  • I think you are right, the Garrett Sears of Kilelton baptised 16 May 1837, could well be Catherine's brother.  Of note also, the sponsers Patrick and Mary Moinihan would be Garret Moynihan's (1852) parents. The parish is right too, Annascaul. Way to go Sara, thanks!
