Hello,

Any information please on Catherine Stack baptised in Ratass Tralee on 10th November 1778.

Catherine's parents are John (Joans) Stack born in Tralee about 1755 and Honora Kenelly also born in Tralee about 1755. They were married in Tralee in June 1779.

Catherine Stack married Cornelius Sheahan on or before 1806. I am open to other people's research on this and have discovered a family tree on Ancestry.com that says Catherine married a David Allman. If this is true it contradicts my reasearch!

Catherine and Cornelius are my fourth great grandparents on my mothers side. Their son Patrick Shehan (b abt 1806)married Mary Conner on the 25th February 1837 (or 1838) at ‘Currow Roman Catholic Church, County Kerry, Ireland’. Patrick and Mary moved to London soon after they were married and they had nine children. After a generation the family name changed to Sheen.

Thanks

    Hello again!

I would use the site I gave you on your other message and you will see an August 1, 1797 marriage between a Catherine Stack and a David Almon in Tralee. I was unable to find a marriage between a Catherine Stack and Cornelius Sheahan. Maybe the parish register will help you. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0680

  • Roger. I appreciate your prompt replies - thanks. And so early in the morning, are you on another time zone? I'll go back to the records to find out who Cornelius married. Trevor

  • Trevor,

Upon reading your information and Roger's reply, it is possible that both marriages are correct. If the same Catherine Stack did marry Cornelius Sheahan it was possibly a second marriage for her.   Just a thought to keep in mind when searching.   Tom

  • Thanks Tom. I always had alternative birth locations for Catherine - Dingle or Tralee. Dingle sort of makes sense because her husband Cornelius was probably born in or near Killarney and they were probably married there. I'm visiting County Kerry again in early September and hope to tread in the footsteps of some of my ancestors. Trevor

  • Hi Trevor, is this the marriage you are referring to? http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/dd248e0567428 for Patrick and Mary 1838?

In Griffiths Valuation the townland is spelled KIlsarkan (East) CIVIL Parish of Dysert, and there is a Cain Connor, witness as per the marriage record, renting land from Jeremiah Daly.We need to be careful here because Connor is such a common name.and the records for the early 1800's are scanty in Kerry overall.

How did you come to Cornelius Sheehan and Catherine Stack as Patrick's parents? Have you an English record which identifies them? I found a couple of that name with a Patrick born 1811 and 5 other children in Lisivigeen/Droumhumper, RC Parish Killarney http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/search.jsp?name2fm=Catherine&name2l=Stack&namefm=Cornelius&namel=Sheehan&location=&yyfrom=&yyto=&submit=Search&sort=&pageSize=100&diocese=&parish=&century=&decade=&ddBfrom=&ddMfrom=&ddDfrom=&mmBfrom=&mmMfrom=&mmDfrom=&yyBfrom=&yyMfrom=&yyDfrom=&ddBto=&ddMto=&ddDto=&mmBto=&mmMto=&mmDto=&yyBto=&yyMto=&yyDto=&locationB=&locationM=&locationD=&member0=&member1=&member2=&member3=&member4=&member5=&member6=&member7=&member8=&member9=&namef0=&namef1=&namef2=&namef3=&namef4=&namef5=&namef6=&namef7=&namef8=&namef9=&namel0=&namel1=&namel2=&namel3=&namel4=&namel5=&namel6=&namel7=&namel8=&namel9=&keyword=&event=

Couples, genearally, but not always, married in the bride's home parish.

It was not unknown for people to walk from Dingle to Tralee or Killarney but more often than not people married within a 3/5 mile radius of their home place.

I can't help but feel there is a gap here somewhere and will help if I can when we hear from you again. To confuse matters Tralee was a Poor Law Union, a town, a CHURCH  Parsh and a CIVIL Parish, ALL WITH DIFFERNT BOUNDARIES and from what you have sent us we don't know to which you are referring..

Looking forward to hearing from you again.

    Warm wishes

  • Hi Martine,

I cannot believe how helpful you, Roger and Tom are being for me with this. Thanks a million.

I'm encouraged by your location of a Cain Connor in the civil parish of Dysert. Dysert figures a number of times in my sources for Patrick. I have the place name 'Kilsarkan' from a lady I have corresponded with in the USA who found it in relation to Patrick and his mother in a family bible.

You mention five other children. I have Patrick's siblings as Mary, Margaret, John, Debora and Bartholomew. Does this corresponds to your five? Patrck named three of his children John, Mary and Bartholomew. I'm sure this makes sense. What do you think?

  • Hi Trevor if you click on the link I posted above it takes you to the list of baptisms I found. Then you will be able to check the children against what you already have. You will also get their sponsors/godparents names which will take you a little further.

have you checked those townlands in Griffiths Valuation to see if the family names are there c1850? http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

    Good luck
