Their first child was born in New York City in 1858, but I am trying to trace them back to original homestead.

Is it possible that they connect to County Kerry?

Mary Shea (parents Cornelius and Mary Shea) b. 1836

Cornelius must have been older.....no data on his parents.....

Family names (from their children) include: John, Kate, Denis, Anna, Bridget.

Ideas?  Thank you!

Ann Marie (g-g-granddaughter of Cornelius and Mary)

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

It is very likely they came from Co. Kerry based on the surnames. I did a quick search for the marriage on www.irishgenealogy.ie (free site) but it did not show up. Likely they were married in NYC.

I could not find a baptismal record for Mary but I did find a Cornelius Shea/Mary Shea marriage in 1834 in Adrogole. This could be another couple.

You posted in Tralee. Do you have info which points to that parish? We do have a parish liaison in Tralee but I don't want to involve her if don't know if they were from that parish.

    Let me know.

  • Thank you, Roger, for the information.  I do not have any information here in USA (yet) that would implicate Tralee.  It was a suggestion from a friend.

The marriage you found COULD be Mary Shea's parents.  She was born 1836 (per death record in USA).  Her death record also indicated she arrived in America 1850, at age 14 (all are approximate as I know how numbers are not always correct).  Due to the common name, have not yet found her immigration records.

Will look for records about the above couple........There is a chance they left Ireland also......

And the searching continues!  THANK YOU!!

  • Wait a minute- is it possible they had the same surname before marriage?

    What does the NR mean?

On second/third reading, it is confusing!

    Thanks, Roger!

  • Thank you, Roger!  Is it peculiar that the marriage record lists their surnames the same?  Was it a common surname in that area?  Or, gulp, perhaps they were related?

  • Ann Marie:

Shea was very common so it is possible that Shea was her maiden name. If they were related the record should show a remark about a dispensation to marry.
