Hello my name is Marian and I am looking for information about my grandfather Patrick Joseph FOLEY. He passed away when my father, Brian William FOLEY  was 18 so I never got to meet him.

I am travelling to Ireland next year and plan to visit Tralee to see if I can some more about him. If anyone know any details  I would be pleased to hear from you.

Patrick was born 20th January 1892 at Union Hospital in Tralee as Patrick Joseph DOWD or O'DOWD.

Mary O'Dowd was unmarried at the time but later married a widower with the surname  BARRY.

In the 1900-01 census Patrick was Patrick Joseph BARRY

In the census 1911 Patrick Joseph FOLEY  was a laborer at a corn mill.

He also may have had some cousins named  MCCARTHY.

We also know that at one time he lived at O'Rahilly's Villa's in Strand Street ,Tralee that have since been pulled down.

Thanks from Marian

  • Hi Fances, well there is always a story behind these things and we are not sure at all if it correct.

My paternal grandmother Ethel Mary O'TOOLE married my paternal grandfather Patrick Joseph FOLEY. On their wedding certificate Patrick put down Patrick FOLEY (dec) as his father's name and Mary DOWD or O'DOWD as his mother.  ( I dont have the document at hand.)

On his birth certificate there is no father listed.

From what we can tell Mary brought the child up alone until she married later. Mary's age changes a little from census to census and Patrick's name is listed in one as FOLEY and another as BARRY. Late when Patrick Joseph FOLEY arrived in Australai aged 20 his name was FOLEY.

An ummarried mother perhaps was a thing to cover up but we think Mary must have needed some kind of help. These days of course things have changed for the better.

    Thanks Marian

  • RE Dowd/Foley

Hi Marian, I check back through messages from time to time and found yours.

Is this the 1892 baptismal record you found http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details/c3c1b90492923

and this the entry for 1911 http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Kerry/Tralee_Urban__part_of_/Strand_Street/292348/

I have been unable to find the marriage of Mary and Michael either in Church Records or in the Civil Records online although there is a strange return in the Civil Records for Michael Barry marrying a James Kerin in 1900 (1911 Census suggests Mary and Michael married in 1900) If you apply to the https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx this marriage record which appears to have been mistranscribed would at least give you the fathers' names which would take you a step further. You will need this Group Registration ID2440053 SR District/Reg AreaTralee

Make sure you request a photocopy which is 4euro. This can be emailed to you.

Do let me know if you have any luck.

    Warm wishes

    Martine
