Looking into my paternal grandfather's family Sullivan -

Michael Sullivan (1845 Kerry - 1916 Cedarhurst, NY, USA) married in 1868 in Kenmare, Kerry to Julia Doyle (15 August 1846 Dirrendaragh, Kerry - 24 MArch 1931 Hewlett, NY, USA) they had seven children, all of whom were born in Kerry:

1. Mary Theresa Sullivan Cuddihy (3 August 1869 Tuosist, Kerry - 1946 Hempstead, NY, USA) married in 1891 in NYC to James Francis Cuddihy (1858 Ireland - 1922 Hempstead, NY).

2.  Jospehine (Johanna) Sullivan (12 December 1870 Tuosist, Kerry - 24 September 1948 Long Island, NY, USA).

3.  Margaret Sullivan (13 April 1872 Tuosist, Kerry - 31 March 1944 Nassua COunty, NY, USA).

4.  Patrick Francis Sullivan (21 December 1873 Tuosist, Kerry -                      NY, USA).

5. John J. Sullivan (30 March 1879 Clonee, Kerry -                NY, USA).

6.  Eleanor 'Nell / Nellie' Sullivan O'Connell (1879 Clonee, Kerry - 14 September 1961 Jamaica, NY, USA) married in 1914 in NY to Malachy O'Connell (1883 Ireland -                   NY, USA).

7.  Michael Francis Sullivan (12 December 1886 Clonee, Kerry - 22 February Elmurst, NY, USA) married on 8 October 1924 in DeBruce, NY to Loretto Anna O'Keefe (16 August 1892 DeBruce, NY - 25 December 1977  Binghamton, NY, USA). Her parents were both from Galway: John & Bedelia (Norton) O'Keefe.

It is known that the Sullivans moved to at least three towns and family oral history states that they last lived in Kenmare.  All nine of them left Ireland in the mid to late 1800's.  The mother, Julia Doyle Sullivan was the daughter of John Doyle (1817) & Johanna Gallivan (       ) both of Chesterfield, were married on 4 February 1845 in  Kenmare, Kerry [witnessed by Timothy Gallivan & John Gallivan and married by Rev. J. O'Sullivan] they had at least eight children.

Known other surnames which married into the family are: O'Keefe, O'Connell, Cuddihy/Cudahy, Lawlor,Cox Sprague, Joyce & Malone.

Any information or question would be welcomed: Mic69@comcast.net.

  • Hi,

There are many current O'Sullivan families living in Tuosist parish.  O'Shea and O'Sullivan are the most common family names in Tuosist parish (both now and back then) so more info would probably be needed to identify which family your ancestors are associated with.  Many O'Sullivan families had nicknames to distinguish them from one another.  Those nicknames are not usually recorded in official records, but are in some baptism records.

The other useful info would be the townland within Tuosist from where the family came.  You do mention Clonee (nowadays spelt Cloonee) which is a townland towards the centre of the parish.  The parish baptism records, from 1844, are available online at http://churchrecords.irishGenealogy.ie  and give the townland for each child baptised.

Further back in the mists of time, the deputy leader of the O'Sullivan Clan of the Berara peninsula had a castle in Ardea townland in Tuosist.

  • Mike,

My favorite site for researching vital records in County Kerry is http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/

I have done some checking for you at this site, but have pretty much struck out. Maybe you can be more successful. But here are some of my thoughts.

You are going to have to have more information about Michael Sullivan to do any search for him. Sullivan is the most used name in Kerry, and Michael was a favorite first name.

Doyle is common, but with the birth date and location, and the marriage year and location you should be able to find additional information. I tried several approaches on this site , but did not find anything of interest. You might do better.

The townland name Dirrendaragh does not exist today, according to Google maps. The suffix of the name, daragh, means fertile, so if you take this off, you are left with Dirren. The closest current day townland names in Kerry are Dirreen and Dirreencallaugh. Dirreen is located near Tralee, and there are some Doyle vital records at this site.

Dirreencallaugh is located about 3 miles from Kenmare where they were married, so I would bet this is the area that Doyle came from.

Unfortunately at this site there are no vital records from a townland named Dirreencallaugh. But remember, these townland names changed through time, and the spelling of names by the recorder and by the indexer is subject to many variations. The closest townland names to Dirreencallaugh listed below did not show any Doyles.

    DERREENACHALLA

    DERRINACHULLA

    DIRREENACALL

    DIRREENACALLA

    DIRREENACHALA

    DIRREENACHALLA

    DIRREENACHALLA.

    DIRREENACHALLAGH

    DIRREENANACHAGH

    DIRREENCALLI

    DIRRENACHALLA

    DIRRINACHALLA

Hopefully this will give you some ideas where to search (or not). I hope you can be more successful.

  • @, mike

I had missed the direendiragh original reference but I can give some info. That is a townland in Templenoe parish, also near Kenmare. Spelling does vary over time. The Doyle name is associated with that parish.

@don - great digging there. Direenacallagha is indeed a townland in Tuosist parish about 3 miles from Kenmare but there are no Doyles associated there as far as I know.

If the cildren grew up in Cloonee in the 1880s then they might have attended Lansdowne national school. There are copies of the rollbook but I dont have access. The roll info would serve only to confirm what you already know anyhow.

Indeed as you say, there is a townland in Templenoe named "Dirrendaragh". It is listed at: http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=Derreenasoo_to_Derrymattry

    Townland                     Parish                   County

    Derreendarragh           Templenoe           Kerry

The 225 Acres are located as Number 12 on the Templenoe map at http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~irlker/templenoe.html

There are 29 vital records of Doyle in Templenoe listed in http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/ I will put the URL for the list in an attachment, because it is too long to display here.

    Mike,

I am interest in your Sullivans  because I have traced my Sullivan ancestors to Gurranes and Clonee both in Tuosist. Florence Sullivan, my GGGGrandfather immigrated to New York City in 1853 with his family. I am descended from the first marriage of his daughter, Margaret. After her first husband, James Shea, died, she married Denis Sullivan, Jr. who was from Clonee.

I visited Gurranes and Clonee earlier this year. I met with Mary Shea, owner of the Lake House in Clonee, and she told me that the Sullivan (Green) family still lived in the area, and she pointed out the house where they live. Unfortunately I did not have time to visit them.

If you see any possible connection between our families, let me know.

You'd think I'd know more of my paternal line with my dad being the first generation born here in the States.  I know nothing of the Sullivan family in Ireland, other than then were from Kerry and had lived in three different towns in Kerry before coming to New York.  My grandfather [ Michael Francis Sullivan]  died in 1959 two years before I was born,  his two brothers, four sisters and parents were all dead prior to my parents meeting in 1949 in Rockaway, Queens, New York.  According to family oral history and my grandfather's obituary, he was from Kenmare, Kerry.  My grandmother (his wife) only knew that he was fron Kenmare as well.  I only know the inforamtion on my great grandmother's family from a family bible and record I have found which places them [DOYLES] in Dirreendarragh.  My Grandfather and his family all settled in the Long Island area of New York.  As far as I know, none of my great grandfather Sullivan's family came to the US.  I've come across GOW in records which fits my great grandfather's inforamtion - Michael Gow Sullivan?  I'll keep looking and keep you informed as I find things or hit road blocks.  Thanks again for responding to my post.  I'm on Ancestry.com and my email is: Mic69@comcastnet.  I'm in Connecticut by the way - Mike

  • Hi MikeS,

GOW is a Sullivan family nickname still in use today in the Kenmare area as in "he is Mike Sullivan Gow". GOWLA is another Sullivan nickname in use.

Irish civil records began in 1864, so I suppose you should be able to obtain a marriage cert for Michael Sullivan + Julia Doyle 1868. That might indicate the names/locations of his parents.  You might then be able to find another current O'Sullivan family in the area who can track back to the same parents of Michael.  DNA testing would confirm if there was a link.

By the way, you referenced "Chesterfield" as the location of the parents of Julia Doyle.  I can't recall for sure but I think that name is used to refer to some area in the vicinity of Kenmare.  Ie an informal name for a small collection of fields that is within some formal named townland.  I note that in the Kenmare marriage records for the parents of Julia it is titled as Castlefield, but that could be a mis-translation by the digitising team, or the original church recorder.

  • In reply to Don's info re Mary/Margaret:

I note BALLINAFULLA as Mary's birth.  That looks like a remote(ish) townland in Dromoughty valley in Tuosist Parish.

Interesting because I think that Chesterfield may also be in Dromoughty valley.

DIREENGARINSHAUGH is listed in the rootsweb townlands page (num 73) but not on the map, and I personally don't recognise it as a current townland.  It may be one of these non-townland placenames.

Castlefield must have existed at one time, because there are numerous baptisms listed there in Kenmare Parish, and a few in Templenoe Civil Parish.

I cannot find Chesterfield in any Kerry townland lists.
