I am researching O.Neills [Neals etc] that lived in Gotham house in Gotham, Ballaghmoon [now in the parish of Castledermot.]
Edward O’Neills was still living there per the 1901 & 1911 Census. His daughter married a John Conlon [owner of the Carlow Nationalist in the early 1900s and the name changed.
I have paperwork to show they were living in Gotham as far back as 1778.

Edwards father [My great-great-grandfather was Bartholomew Neal born in Gotham and Baptised on 13 Mar 1792 [From catholic church records].
He was married about 1830 to a Margaret Lawler from ???????
I would like to get his marriage location and cert if possible.
Margaret Neill, Gotham appears in the Griffiths valuation of 1849/1850
Bartholomew's Parents [from Baptism details] were Michael & Judith [Walsh] Neal.
I would like to get any further info on these.
Judith Neale, Gotham appears in the Applotment Books in 1826
Judith Neill, Gotham appears in "A register of trees" Co. Kildare 1826
Judith Neale, Gotham also appears in various lease book from the Duke of Leinster" estate
Laurence Neale, Gotham appears in Diocesan Administration Bonds, Dublin Diocese 1778

I would like to trace back to when Gotham house was built and when the O'Neills / Neals etc. moved into Gotham and where they came from. Any help would be appreciated.
Regards

  • Dear Larry

I couldn't find a marriage record for Bartholomew and Margaret.

The only record I was able to find was for a Judith Walsh married to a William Neal in Co. Kilkenny on 27-Feb-1816 in Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. This would probably have been Judith's home parish as they would have married where Judith lived and grew up. I don't know if this has any connection to your search as parents' names on both sides are not recorded.

Have you considered contacting Castletown House Archives to see if they have a family tree or family papers available?

  • Hi Larry

The Irish Newspaper Archives has a good list of local and national newspapers on their site so it's a good idea to always search the national ones first and see where they get you -  The Freemans Journal for example. If you actually Google Irish Newspaper Archives the search results give you the option to search by county so you can see what newspapers were available for the time period relevant to your search.

The British  Newspaper Archives has additional sources available and some that are not on the Irish site though I am not as familiar with it.
