James Shaughnessy who married Alicia Power in 1865.

Trying to find a connection with a John Bentley who died 22 March 1866, with a connection to Ardee Athy.

Connected to James, i think he could have been his half brother.  He was a Railway Gauge, or so it says on another document.

Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

You probabky will need to do more work on your end to establish a connection between James and John.

I can tell you that James Shaughnessy was from Waterstown townland in Brideschurch civil parish. The marriage took place in the RC church of Caragh in Co. Kildare.

I located the civil marriage index record under Alicia Power. You will have to write to the General Register Office and get a copy of this record. Cost will be around four euros. Eventually the image will come online but I can't give you a date when it will be available. The record will tell you the name of the fathers of the bride and groom. If you need instructions for getting a copy of the record, let me know.

Unfortunately if James and Alicia were both from the Caragh RC parish then baptismal records will not be available becaue Caragh records start in 1849. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0695

I was unable to locate a civil death index record for John Bentley.

    • Hi Roger

I had a copy of the Marriage Certificate already, James father was also called James, and Alicia's father was William, how would i find their mother's names though?  I have 1831 for Alicia, but no dates for James, we think he must have died sometime before 1901, because he isn't on that census, the only ones listed on that census are Patrick his sister Catherine and his mother Alicia, which is down as Allis on the form, and they are down as living in 11 Albert Place in Dublin.

I found in the Wills, Administrations and Probates that James had taken out probate on Barretstown upon John Bentley's death, John lived in Ardee Athy and was a bachelor, he died on 22 March 1866 and thats when Jame's is down as taking out the probate.  Jame's is listed on their as being a brother of John's by the half blood, and being one of his next of kin, so where there more siblings?, what did they make of him taking out the probate?, and what happened during that whole process of him taking out the probate? why did he take it out?

So what happened to Barretstown in the long term after Jame's death, that the family ended up living in Dublin in 1901?  Need to get a date for Jame's death.

Where would you start to look for their burial plots?

Sorry for the delay in responding. You have a lot of questions that I can't answer. I was unable to find a baptismal record for Alicia from 1825-1835 in Co. Kildare on Roots Ireland. Not sure why the family migrated to Dublin. You can try www.irishgenealogy.ie for death records for James Shaughnessy. They have images from 1891-1940 and earlier images will be added in the near future.

    • Hi Roger,

I know lots of questions, probably a bit more confusing because both father and son are called James Shaughnessy.

We were given Barrettstown as the location for James, i didn't know about the Waterstown connection until i saw your reply.  Could they have been buried in Brides Church Cemetry?  Would there be a listing for that graveyard somewhere, its quite old, i don't think it would be safe to go take a look round, i checked it out on the graveyards website and its down as being a closed graveyard.

Maybe if i give you what i have from James and Alicia's Marriage Certificate that would help, sometimes name associations are a good way to trace people as well as dates.

      Marriage Date:  26/02/1865

      Place:  Caragh, Naas, Kildare.

(also for caragh have - Kildare & Leighlin -- alternative parish name Downings)

      Name's:  Jame's Shaughnessy (Jr) - Alicia Power.

      Jame's profession:  Labourer.

      Jame's is from Barretstown.

      Alicia is from Waterstown.

Fathers names: James Shaughnessy (Snr) is a Labourer - William Power is a farmer.

Two wittnesses for the wedding:  John Smullen and Mary Byrne.

      They had Three childern;

Bridget Maria Shaughnessy, born 15 September 1865, we think she died soon after but can't be sure, can't find a death certificate.  I did manage to find some information about a baptism for 17 of September of that same year.

Catherine Shaughnessy (Kate), born 1872, died 22/09/1951

Patrick Shaughnessy (my great grandfather) born 27/01/1868, died 29/06/1946

Both Catherine and Patrick are buried together out in Glasnevin With his son and daughter-inlaw.

Catherine never married but continued to live with Patrick and help to raise his childern when his wife (Mary Shea) died in 1910.

Hope the above is a bit more helpful to you.

Many thanks for all your help Roger, i really appreciate it.
