Christopher Callan was my 3X Great Grandfather.  He was born in Ireland either 1813, 1811 or 1807.  Different records have different information.  According to US census records, his oldest son, James, was born in New York in 1846. His wife, Lucy was born in Pennsylvania.  This leads me to believe that Christopher must have arrived in the US prior to 1846. He was naturalized Jan. 10, 1853 in Broome County, NY. I don't have proof, but my grandmother believed that our Callans came from Kilkenny Co.

Any info that you have would be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Scordi

there is a place in County Kilkenny called Callan but I do not think this is where the name is from. I have looked in Grifffiths Valuation here http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml?action=nameS… There is only two entries and the same person I assume and they reside in Kilkenny city.

The name is associated with this part of Ireland, north east and Louth in my case. There are 685 hits for Callan on the above site (this is not necessarily 685 different people as it is a list of land owners and tenants with location maps) the are predomintantly in Louth or the neighbouring counties of Meath and Monaghan with a smattering of Callans in other counties.

Most migration from this area would have been via Liverpool as there was a service from Drogheda and other ports along this coast to Liverpool, no records of passengers as it was and is still a common travel area.

A search on Find My Past for the period does not bring back any hits for that era but most Christopher Callans in the mid to late 1880s are in Louth, Monaghan or Kildare.

The RC Church records are online here but by date only and are difficult to read in some places. http://registers.nli.ie/

Church of Ireland records are also been slowly put on line here http://ireland.anglican.org/information/63

Tithe apploppments for 1824 to 1838 are here, again only head of house. http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp It returns 2 Christopher Callan's in Monaghan in 1823.

Please get back to me if I can offer any more assistance but Irish records for that period are sketchy at best.

    Good Luck

    Pat
