Looking for family! John Charles Cooney was born 14 June 1841 the son of Matthew Cooney and Catherine Joyce. Family lore says he was youngest of about 12 children and when he was a wee baby his Father passed on. His mother either came to America and remarried or remarried and then sailed to America with all his siblings but left him with his Uncle Patrick (?) and aunt.
When he was 17 he sailed to America to be with his family, but when he arrived they were all strangers to him. He was lonely for his homeland so sailed home. His Aunt passed on and it is said he did not get along with his new step-aunt so by the age of 21 he went back to America. It is said he went to St Louis to live with Agnes Z, his sister. We lost contact with his wear-abouts until he was working on the Santa Fe/ Southern Pacific Railway as a stone mason, a trade he learned in Ireland. By 1880 he married Mary Ellen Summers whose parents were from Ireland too. Mary Ellen was daughter of Michael Edward Summers and Mary Ellen McCormick (Her mother was from Nenagh, County Tipperary.) 3 Oct 1919 he died in Condon, Oregon Please email DigMyPast@msn.com

In the meantime have you tried looking at church records from Callan parish?Most Catholic records are held locally so you may need to write to the local parish priest for possible assistance. One website that you may find useful is the Irish Times where they give an overview of what records are available in specific parishes. It also shows you where copies of the records are available. www.familysearch.org has a huge database of genealogical records including some church records for Ireland.
www.rootsireland.ie have a large collection of Irish Church records, however you have to pay to use this site.
I searched for Cooney?s in Callan parish in Griffith?s Valuation. This is a land valuation survey dating from 1848-64. There is a record of a Patrick Cooney in 1849:
