Hi,

I am researching my family tree, my grandmother was Johanna McGrath, born 1882 in Newton, Kilkenny, her father was John Mcgrath, born 1842, Burnchurch, her married Mary Bryne in danesfort, in 1866.

I number of their children wer born in and around Danesfort, I am searching for both living and dexceased relatives in the area, preferably living!

A number of the family also worked at the castle, where John was a coachman, and Mary a chambermaid.

I would be grrateful for any help.

thanks

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I found a transcription of the 1866 civil marriage record which is below and it mentions the name of the fathers of the bride and groom. I was trying to find the family in the 1901 census. Was Johanna still in Ireland in 1901? Were her parents living?

  • Hi Rodger,

Thanks for that, John McGrath, my great-grandfather was living on Lees Lane, in the 1901 census, with his wife, mary, and his son John, and daughters, Katie and Johanna, my grandmother.

in the 1911 census, he was living on Abet Street, with his wife and my granmother, who married my grandfather, Alfred Thompson, in 1915 in Kilkenny.

After that I have hit the proverbial  brick wall! very difficult to find anything else, so many McGraths!

    Thanks again,

  • Further to my posts on the Mcgrath family, my great grandfather , John Mcgrath, father was William Mcgrath, 1834, who Married Ellen Roberts, in Danesfort.

His siblings were, Thomas Mcgrath, 1838, John Mcgrath, 1842, James Mcgrath, 1843, Mary McGrath, 1846, Judy McGrath, 1848, and Catherine Mcgrath, 1851.

They were all christened at Cuffs Grange, Danesfort, and both of my great grandfathers were married there.

I was wondering if the local church keeps any records, or if any relatives of the family still live in that area.

    Thanks

Here is a link to the parish register which was microfilmed and then digitized from the register maintained by the local church. There won't be any additional records locally. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0983

Here is the link https://www.eirphonebook.ie/#  to the online Irish phone book which is a partial list of phone users. Use the Residential Tab and then enter mcGrath in Co. Kilkenny. You will get 34 records but only one near Cuffesgrange.

  • Hi Roger,

Many thanks for that, will start looking, may pop over next year to have a look around the area, came to kilkenny a couple of years ago, but didnt travel around the area of Danesfort. At least I am beginning to narrow things down a bit.

  • Hi Keith

I have been researching my family and believe that my great great grandfather James McGrath may also be the James in your family tree.  He came over to England and married in Bristol in 1867 to a Mary Ann Padfield. I know that his father was called William from his marriage certificate and that he was a shepherd. James appears in 2 census records in Bristol and on one his place of birth says Kilkenny and the other says Tipperary and is age also differs but I have found a William McGrath in Burnchurch and a baptism for a James which may be the James I am looking for. William also shows up in the Griffiths valuation records as being a tenant of land at Coalsfarm in Burnchurch which would tie in with him being a shepherd and also Farmley in Burnchurch as a tenant of a house and office.

If this is the right James then he would have been the brother of your great grandfather John. Do you have any information on any of John's brothers and sisters?

I am travelling over to Ireland next week and intend going to Burnchurch and Danesfort to see if I can find out anymore.

    Best Wishes
