Hello, my name is Frank Walsh and I live in Newfoudland (Talamh an Eisc), Canada. My Great Grandfather, Michael Walsh, was baptized in An Rinn Parish in 1838. His parents, Patrick and Mary Walsh, were married in the same parish in 1838 and lived in Upper Helvick. I am hoping to connect with any relatives of Michael, Pat, or Mary still living in Ireland. Slan go foill.

  • Frank, Paddy Walsh had one  brother John, that I know of. Their father was also Patrick. the extended families are still to be found scattered all around Helvick. Your Paddy married Mary Paul in 1838, they had the following Children.

Michael - who you mention married Mary, daughter of Michael Terry in 1871.

Kate  - born 1854 (Don't know anything about her)

John  - born 1858 mariied Mary cuddihy of Ballingoul in 1886.

Nicol?s -  am not certain of, but I think this is another sibling so,

Niocl?s -  married Ellen Carey and they had

    John who never maried

Niocl?s, who married twice, first to nellie kelly and second to hanora Fitzgerald of leamybrien, they had no family.

Willie married annie Walsh of Knockpower Helvick.

And finally nellie who emigrated to Boston.

Now to John brother of  paddy (top of page)

He married a sister to Mary Paul , Ellen Paul in 1857, and they had

Norrie who married Tom 'Boyo' Walsh,( their son Michael, b 1860, was shot in 1919.)

mary 1863-1941 married patrick hayes, knnockpower Helvick.

    Kate 1868 ?

    Ellen married Niocl?s Terry

    hope this helps some

  • Hello Eddie: Thanks for your reply. I'm sure that the Walshes you refer to are related to my Paddy Walsh since they all lived in Helvick (my Paddy was listed as living in Upper Helvick in 1838 - where he married Mary Pole in 1838). Their son (my great grandfather), Michael, was baptized in An Rinn parish in 1838 (St. Nicholas Chapel?), The next record I have of Michael was in 1864 in Halifax. He married Johanna Quinn in 1871 in Newfoundland where they had a number of children until he drowned in 1885. Their eldest son (my grandfather) was born in 1871 and was named (what else) Patrick.

I do appreciate your reply, I just wish more Walshes from this area would "tune in". Slan go foill.

  • Thanks very much for this link, Eddie. The blog reminded me of so many things and ways here in Newfoundland. Man, I could write a book. It's no wonder that Tim Pat Coogan called this place the most Irish place outside of Ireland. We have often been accused of being "more Irish than the Irish". So many attitides and ways of thinking and reacting have been passed down from my Grandfather to my Father and to me.

In any event I think that I have traced my Great Great Grandfather (Patrick Walsh), his wife (Mary Pole), and my Great Grandfather (Michael Walsh) to Liverpool in 1851. I have no trace of this family from then on until Michael shows up in Halifax, Nova Scotia in 1864 and in Newfoundland (being married) in 1871. I don`t suppose there is any way I could trace Patrick Walsh`s father in Helvick (parents names not given on Patrick and Mary`s marriage certificate- at least the one I got online).

    All the best.
