My first time posting. I am looking for information on a John Grogan (1815-1897) from Lisdowney, Kilkenny and Freshford (Ossory diocese) who married Mary Buggy about 1839 and had 2 daughters Bridget and Julia. Mary died as well as son Patrick  before 1850. He then married Bridget Dunphy, had a son James in 1851 and they all came to US in 1852. His mother Bridget and a sister came over as well (per NY 1855 census) He was a tailor, may have had a brother James and cousins named Fay or Delany. I would like to know more about his family, esp parents, siblings. After he came to Rome NY, he had 4 more sons, wife died in 1875 and he died in 1897. Have only recently found a possible connetion to Freshford. Thank you.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the July 1839 marriage record for John and Mary and the October 1852 marriage between John and Biddy (Bridget). I was unable to find the baptismal record for James. Possibly he was born on the ship or in the USA.

I also was unable to find a baptismal record from John Grogan and I searched in Kilkenny from 1820-1840.

The 1849 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows a John Grogan in Bohergloss townland whihc may be your ancestor. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/kilkenny/freshford.htm

Here is the parish register for Lisdowney http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0996 and Freshford  http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0985

Let me know what questions you have.

  • Thank you for your prompt reply and useful information. The John Grogan I am seeking was born around 1815 and his mother's name may have been Bridget (born around 1798). I have seen the baptismal record for the son James (born 25 Dec 1851, baptized 27 Dec 1851) and it appears his parents married in Oct 1852 just prior to coming to US! Is it possible to find any records of his ancestors? Both he and a brother (James?) were tailors although they could not read or write. John and Mary Buggy Grogan did have a son Patrick that died in Ireland as did Mary. When John emigrated to US he brought his mother, 2 daughters from first marriage, new wife and infant son.

  • I searched for a baptismal record for James Grogan around 1810-1820 but did not find a record. He was likely baptized before the beginning of Lisdowney records.

  • Hi msjake-1,

My mother is a Grogan from Lisdowney and I came across this thread while researching our family tree. I'm not sure if you'll see this message (it's been a long time since you posted) but if you do see this and reply, I'm happy to get in touch and share what I know about the Grogan family.

FYI, I think the baptismal record of 1851 for James Grogan was digitized incorrectly as 'John Grogan' as there is a John Grogan shown as being baptised on 27 Dec 1851 in the digital record (I believe the actual John Grogan was born around 1855 after the family had emigrated to the US)

    Best regards,

    Paul.
