I am looking for Michael (James)  Hickey and Mary Doyle. Estimated years of birth Michael Hickey 1797 Mary Doyle 1807.

They were married in Graignamanagh 27th Feb 1837. I believe they lived in Milltown, Ullard, Kilkenny. Michael's parents names James Hickey and Margaret. Michael (James) & Mary had Mathew (1838) Anne (1840) William (1842) Thomas (1844) Pat (1847)  John (1848) and Bridget (1850). All the children were baptised at Graignamanagh and resided in Milltown.

I have found a family of Hickey's in Tinryland, Carlow register who could be Michael's family. James Hickey & Margaret Dwyer - children Pat, (1814) Michael (1817) and Margaret. Could this be Michael's family?

I think Anne Married William Darby, William married Mary Foley, Thomas married Anne Cullen, John married Anastastia Kena and Bridget married Patrick Cleary.

Can I please ask for your assistance in confirming the above.

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

I think it will be difficult to find a baptismal record for Michael because the baptisms for that parish start in 1838. I did search on Roots Ireland but did not find a good possible record. Not confident that the family in Tinryland is the correct family because of the location of Tinryland.

I looked for a marriage record for Anne Hickey and William Darby but got no record. I did find an 1868 marriage for a William Hickey and Mary Foley see below but Mooncoin parish is a good distance away from Graiguenamanagh. I also found a Thomas Hickey/Anne Cullen marriage in Inistoige. See below. Also found a John Cullen/Anastasia Kena marriage. I'm skeptical about this record (see below) because of the location. Also, located a Patrick Cleary/Bridget Hickey marriage. See below.

Let me know what questions you have.

Do you think the record I have for William Hickey and Mary Foley would be correct ?

Also the record I have for John Hickey and Anastasia Kana would be correct ?

I have not found any marriages for Mathew (1838) and Pat (1847)

How can I go about finding the family from this era to present day? It would be great to be able to find some living relatives.

We have Thomas Hickey's family to present day as he immigrated to New Zealand which is our immediate family.

Unfortunately none of the family here knew anything about Thomas's family in Ireland

    Thank you for your help,

    Regards Jan

Your records and the records I located match up except I could not find Anne and William Darby's marriage.

The problem I have with the records you located is the location of some of these marriages compared to Graiguenamanagh which is in east Kilkenny on the Carlow border. Ullard civil parish (as mentioned in your first message)  is in the area near Graiguenamanagh but there is also a Ullid civil parish which is shown in the William Hickey marriage record and Ullid is nowhere near Graiguenamanagh.

Finding family currently living in the area would be challenging. Hickey and Cleary are common surnames. I did look up Darby in the 1901 and 1911 census records and may have found Mary Hickey Darby.

Have you considered autosomal DNA testing?

  • Iam not sure that this Mary Hickey Darby is part of the family.

The only Mary I have is Mary Doyle Hickey. Anne Hickey married William Darby as above and I have found in 1901 Census that she was a widow and living in Killeshandra, Co Cavan. She is listed as sister in law of Denis Carton and wife Mary (Darby). she is from Co. Kilkenny. It appears that William Darby had a sister Mary, she was first married to Edward Bryne .She had Patrick (1867) Jane (1868) and Edward Bryne (1875). I have found a marriage for her to Edward Bryne. (Trim Meath 1861 ) which could be possible. But have not found marriage to Denis Carton. She had a daughter Katryn (1877).It states on the census that Edward's sir name is Carton.

All that aside I think that Anne Darby widow is  Anne Darby Hickey the only diffrence being that she would have been 60 at the time of census and her age is given as 58. I have not been able to find a death for William Darby. 1901 he was deceased.

Please let me know where Mary Darby Hickey fits in to the family.

I do not know anything about autosomal DNA testing how does this work in finding the relatives ?

    Thank you

    Regards

Sorry! I got my first names confused with Anne Darby and Mary Darby.

I don't no how old William Darby was when they married in 1867. There is a civil death index record in the Cavan registration district in 1875 but it says the deceased was 78.

Autosomal DNA testing looks at your DNA and looks for matches with people on both your paternal and maternal lines. Ancestry and Family Tree DNA have the test. For Family Tree you want the Family Finder test. Once you get your matches (usually takes five weeks) you look for close connections and e-mail them to see where you may have a family surname in common and go from there.

  • Hi Roger,

I do not think this is our William Darby  1875 death at age 78. (he would have been 34)

If it was 1901 he would have been 61 years old

    This is his baptism record:-

I am just wondering if there is a message board at the church in Graignamanagh that the current parish members have access to. If there is I could try to get a post on it to find any living relatives. We will certainly look into the DNA.

    Thank you for your help
