Looking for marriage and birth records for 2nd great grandparents Edward Comerford and Alice Arkwright (multiple variations).  Likely between 1835 and 1842.  On NLI I have found St John's, Kilkenny baptism records for my great grandfather Matthew Comerford April 1867 (residence Windgap) and possible siblings all list residence of Maudlin St, Kilkenny.  Margaret Sept 1864, Michel Jan 1859, John 1857, Bridget May 1854, Thomas Aug 1846, Eliza Jun 1844, and William Dec 1842.  Also have hint from a US death certificate of a Patrick born in 1841.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

  • Patricia,  Thank you.

It would be great to have more pre-1900 records like census to truly connect the dots.  Looks like rootsireland is another site I should consider subscribing to.  I am still a genealogy novice and while I like to think I have good analytical skills.  In the genealogy world I am still learning to determine what is a reasonable assumption and what is a not.

Is there anything concerning that my grandfather birth/baptism listed residence Windgap, but all other information being found is Maudlin St, Kilkenny?

Good confidence in Patrick baptism info since Novemebr 1904 death certificate had age at death 63.  Pretty accurate compared to his brother Matthew my great grandfather where I have found at least 5 different years of birth - birth certificate and baptism 1867,. birth year at marriage 1870, and three different birth years in the 1870s on 1900, 1910, and 1920 US census.  A Mary Comerford is also a sponsor for two of the other children's baptisms.

Pretty much ditto for for the marriage.  Dates makes sense and there is Mary Comerford again.  Amazing how many different ways I have found Alice Arkwright can be phonectically spelled or transcribed inaccurately.

I like your "MAY" on Edward baptism.  Again I wish their was more definitive way to validate the connection,  Might Mary be a sister?

In my searches I haven't found a lot of Irish RC Arkwrights, so also like this one.

  • I found another solid clue in Massachusetts to possibly help narrow down 2x great grandfather Edward Comerford parents.  He very likely had a brother named John.born about 1819.

Can you try and find both and Edward and John in those date ranges, maybe between 1810 and 1825 with the same parents?  possibly at ST JOHN's

John Comerford-At the National Soldiers' Home, Togus, Me., Jan. 18, 1909 John Comerford 89 yrs. 8 mos.  Late member of Co, A, old 9th Mass. Volunteers. Funeral from the residence of his niece, Mrs. Margaret Ford (nee Comerford I, 320 Columbia St. Cambridge, Friday, 22, at 830.

The funeral was held from the residence of his niece, Mrs. William A. Ford, 320 Columbia street,

My analysis of the clues - I think fairly conclusive that John and Edward were brothers.

    1) - Margt Comerford mentioned above born Sep 1864 in Kilkenny, Parents Edward and Alice Arkwright

    2) - Alice (Arkwright) Comerford 1889 funeral was at Margaret Ellen Comerford house in Cambridge, Mass, USA

    3) - Margaret Ellen Comerford 1898 married to William Allen Ford - parents Edward and Alice Arkwright - neighboring city Somerville, MAss USA

    4) - John Comerford funeral at house of his niece Mrs William A Ford in one newspaper, Mrs Margaret Ford (nee Comerford) in another Cambridge Mass, USA.  He also was in the same house in the 1900 census, but listed as lodger.

  • Thank you for any help you can provide on turning a possible baptism into a probable.  Previous help was great.

Earlier in the trail you raised the "possibility" this might be my 2xGreat Grandfather Edward Comerford Baptism.  Since then I have found a couple of more clues that may take a possible to a probable.

This MAY be your Edward. Parish is the same. The father is Patrick and your Edward’s first son is Patrick.

    2.  I also noticed in St John's records a Mary Comerford was a sponsor at their wedding, first born Patrick baptism, and two additional baptisms.  Might Mary be a sister or other close relative?

Again thank you ahead of time.
