Does anyone have any information on a Margaret Flemming Malone that had a son, Michael in 1858?  She was married to John Malone.  I am trying to confirm that she was my Great Great Grandmother, but I can't find any documentation other than a very hard to read baptism record from Killeshin Parish, Sept 1858.  I can confirm that my Ggrandfather was Michael Malone from the same parish.  Michael's marriage record identifies his father name as John.  The 1901 census records identify Michael's mother's name as Margaret.

The tradition of naming son's after the Grandfathers has made for a very tenuous paper trail.

I would be very grateful to be able to confirm with added documentation that John Malone did marry Margaret Flemming and have a son, Michael.

Thank you for your assistance.

The subscription site Roots Ireland has a October 3 1858 baptismal record for a Michael Malone father John, mother Margaret Flemming in the RC parish of Graiguecullen listed in Co. Carlow. The RC parish of Killeshin and Graiguecullen is on the border with Laois and Carlow. The family lived in Ballyhide townland which is in the civil parish of Killeshin in Co. Laois.

There were also baptismal records for a Bridget 1855 Judith 1857 Mary 1859 Margaret 1864 Judith 1868. All of the other baptismal records were held in Inistioge RC parish in Co. Kilkenny. Family lived in Oldcourt.

So the question I have were there two different John Malone/Margaret Flemming couples o rjust one?

  • Thank you Roger.  Family history says that the family is from Rossmore Townland, Killeshin, Laois..  It looks like Rossmore and Ballyhide are neighboring townlands. I am fairly confident that the Ballyhide Malones are my ancestors.  Thank you.  I had no information of Michael's sisters.  Hopefully, their records will provide additional documentation on John and Margaret Flemming.

  • Roger, I've been unable to find baptismal or birth information on three of the four female Malones that you found, (Bridgett, Judith, Mary).  I have access to Ancestry.com and also have used Irish Genealogy.ie to no avail.  I can't find any record for these three women.  Did you find their birth records on the National Database, (Irish Genealogy.ie)?

I'm quite confused.  How could there be two couples named John and Margaret (nee Flemming) Malone?

    Any insights are appreciated.

I found the baptismal records on the subscription site Roots Ireland. Civil registration of births started in 1864. See sixth record at the link for the civil birth record for Judith. Bridget and Mary would not have a birth record.

    https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1868/03437/2262212.pdf

The girls were all baptized in Inistioge RC parish in Kilkenny. Here is the parish register https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0980  Bridget was baptized January 5 1855 and Mary was baptized May 15 1859. You can use the register and scroll to view the actual baptismal entries.

When I see one child baptized in one county and other children in another county, I always consider the possibility of two different couples with the same names. Likely not the case in this situation.
