Daniel Kennedy (born 27 Feb 1838 in Ireland) and Margaret Donald (born 6 May 1831 in Aberdeen, Scotland) moved to Canada in 1863 with their older son (Edward) George Kennedy, and Patrick James Kennedy (six months old) and settled in Chatham, Kent County, Ontario, Canada.  Son Patrick James was born on Sep 28, 1862 and baptized by Henry Herbert on Nov 30, 1862 in the Parish of Rathsaran in the County of Queen's (entry number 13). They were living in Rathsaran and Daniel is shown as a pensioner.  He served in the Crimean War and was injured several times.  He and Margaret died in Essex, Ontario and are buried there.  My father-in-law is 94 and Daniel is his grandfather.  Any local or ancestral information would be appreciated as I would like to be able to pass it along to him.

  • Hi Norm,

You could try checking the land records called the Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38) if you haven't already for Daniel's relatives or the later Griffith's Valuation (1848-64) for Daniel himself. The Tithe Applotment Books (1823-38): Microfilm copies of the books for all of Ireland are available at the National Archives of Ireland (NAI) http://www.nationalarchives.ie/genealogy1/genealogy-records/tithe-applotment-books-and-the-primary-griffith-valuation/ or the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS). Griffith's is freely available here: www.askaboutireland.com or here: www.failteromhat.com Failte Romhat has lots of other useful links you could try looking at.

You may try contacting the Portlaoise Ireland Reaching Out parish administrator directly for assistance.

Church records may also be of use to you.

Church of Ireland parish registers for the period up to 1870 are public records. Registers are available for about one third of the parishes, however many were destroyed in the Public Records Office in Dublin in 1922. Most are still held by the local clergy, although some are in the National Archives of Ireland and others are in the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin. A list of all surviving registers is available in the National Archives. http://ireland.anglican.org/about/42 and http://www.nationalarchives.ie/.  Some Catholic parish registers are held in the National Library of ireland http://www.nli.ie/en/parish-register.aspx . You may also try contacting the local diocese for further assistance.

One database of information on Co Laois is available for a fee from http://laois.rootsireland.ie/

I wish you the best of luck with your search.
