I would love to find out anything more I possible could before visiting Ireland. I would be so interested to find relatives whom I don't even know exist. I am visiting Ireland in just a couple of month's to kive out my deceaseed mother's dream of going to Ireland. She was unable to do so in her lifetime and I am completing her dream and want to leave no stone un tunred. Want to really find the area, explore and possibly meet realtives.

The 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing shows an Arthur Coles living in Kilboderry townland. I assume that is your great-great-grandfather. http://www.failteromhat.com/griffiths/leitrim/kiltoghert.htm Kilboderry is a very small townland only 69 acres. Kilboderry is about two kilometers northeast of Carrick on Shannon. www.askaboutireland.ie  has more info on the Coles land holding in Kilboderry.

The 1901 census for Kilboderry shows Bernard and his family and Anne the widow of Arthur living alone.

The 1911 census for Bernard and his family and also Anne with her daughter Sarah is shown below.

I located a 1914 civil death index record for an Anne Coles. The year of birth provided by the informant was 1841. I assume this is the correct record for your great-great-grandmother.

Looks like Arthur died in 1888.

  • Hello from Carrick on Shannon

My name is Geraldine  - sorry your name is not listed above.  If you would like I could ask the local paper The Leitrim Observer to publis this article and see if anyone would be able to help you out with this.  They would need a name and email address thought.  Just a thought

  • Hello Roger

Thanks for all the info and your time. All the info you provided is correct and this is them. Would you happen to know how I may be able to locate living descendents of my ancestors who may still be living in the area? Thanks for everthing.. This site is wonderful. I also noticed your location is Castlemore Roscommon... How far would that be from the Carrick on Shannon Kilboderry location? I am actually staying 2 nights in a castle in Roscommon. I hope they are semi close since the time in Roscommon is the time I have set aside to check out the area in which my great grandmother came from and hopefully find some living descendents from my ancestors. Thanks for your help.

  • Colleen:

I actually live in the States but my grandmother was born in Castlemore parish in Roscommon (Ballaghaderreen is the main town). Not sure which castle you are staying at in Roscommon. If it is Kilronan Castle, you are ten miles from Carrick on Shannon. Have a great trip!
