Howdy,

I'm looking to connect with folks that know of a Brigid McMorrow (born? & emigrated to U.S.?).  Her parents were (father) McMorrow and Brigid Cullen.  She was my grandmother on Dad's side.   I do believe she immigrated to the U.S, when she was a teenager...I think her parents died or she was otherwise orphaned as I recall that she spoke of living with her uncle prior to coming to the U.S.

When she came here she worked as a domestic and changed her first name to Josephine (as there was quite a bit of discrimination against the Irish at that time).  I would very much like to find my roots and possibly connect.  I am also very interested in becoming an Irish citizen.

Peace,

Pam

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Was Bridget born in 1909? If she was born in 1909, the record below could be the correct record. There was also an 1898 baptismal record where the mother had a surname of Cullen but her first name was not Bridget. This would be the 1911 census record for the McMorrow family. http://census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Glenfarn/Sranagros…

    Hi Pam

Bridget McMorrow was born on the 1st March 1909 and baptised on the 20th March 1909 in Manorhamilton  county Leitrim, her parents were Hugh McMorrow and Bridget Cullen from the address Sranagross.

Bridget and both parents  lived with her paternal grandmother also named Bridget according to the 1911 census of Sranagross. Hugh her father was 43  and a farmer and Bridget 30 (according to the census) http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Glenfarn/Srana…

Bridgets father Hugh was born in Sranagross- Cloonclare on the 3rd April 1868, his parents Bartolomew  McMorrow and Bridget Flynn, Hughs fathers name is down and Bartly on the record

If you are interested in applying for the Irish citizenship you might need Bridgets full birth certificate these can be ordered from the Health Service Executive online http://www.hse.ie/eng/services/list/1/bdm/Certificates/

  • Yes!!!   That's it!   :)  Thank you!!!  This is so very exciting!

How do I find and connect with any living relations from this point?  I would also like to trace more of the history so I understand the story better.  I want to understand how and why she immigrated to U.S. so young.  Was she alone?

I recall in school I had to write about my ancestry (maybe 4th grade) and my grandmother didn't really want to speak about Ireland.  What I was able to gather was that they were quite poor and that there was some unrest with certain 'soldiers' that used to shoot at the children for 'fun'.  I can't imagine how scary this must have been for her.

My father is still alive and I would very much like to have something to help connect him back with his own roots.  We've dreamed of going to Ireland for many years, but didn't really know how to go about connecting with potential relatives.  I would love to be able to make this journey with Dad, and have felt 'pulled' in this direction for as far as I can remember.

    Looking forward to your reply!

    peace,

    pam

I looked at the online Irish phone book  http://www.eirphonebook.ie/  This is only a partial list of phone users. There were 16 McMorrows in Co. Leitrim but none in Sranagross. There were also 15 Cullens but none in Sranagross. Make sure you use the Residential Tab.

I looked at the 1901 census for Sranagross and below are the census records for Hugh and Bridget's family  before they were married. I also found a transcription of the 1906 civil marriage record. See below.

  • Hi,

We might be related. My great grandmother was Annie McMorrow, her mother was Catherine Cullen and her father was John McMorrow, according to her death certificate. She was born in the Manorhamilton area. She wound up in Denver, Colorado. My grandmother was her oldest, and when she & my grandfather were eminent-domained to build Stapleton Airport, they moved to San Jose, California because she had Cullen cousins there. Have any of you done the DNA tests and loaded results onto Gedmatch? My number is A164585.

  • Dear Pam,

Where do the MCHUGH'S fit in to this line?.  Mine are from Mohill, Leitrim or thereabouts.

Looking for parents (possibly Peter McHugh) and wife Mary. of County Leitrim......our BRICK WALL.

Their sons who came to USA in 1857 and 1867 to New York are:  John b. 1842, Thomas b. 1843 and Peter, b. 1848.  All men were blacksmiths and at least one was a fine carriage maker in Manhattan. Other children? unknown.

Thomas ended up in Arkansas   Peter ended up in Tennessee and John was still in Manhattan when the other brothers left there.

I have more details of the families of Peter and Thomas, but much of John's life and whereabouts is unknown..

Would be forever grateful for any more informatin which might lead us to the ones who stayed in Ireland.

    Cheryl Conant McHugh.
