I am a descendent of James Hannon, b Feb. 1833. He may have been from Doon West, Gorteen, Sligo Co. Ireland. Thomas was married to Bridget Regan (Reagan) on May 22, 1853 in the Manorhamilton Roman Ctholic Church, Parish of Cloonclare, County Leitrim. They immigrated to the USA soon after their wedding and lived in Hoosick Falls, NY. James had a brother Thomas who married Bridget Regan's sister Ellan J. Regan. Any information on Hannon's from Gurteen area wildy appreciated. Regards, Paul Hannon, Halifax, NS Canada

RC church records (baptismal) for Kilfree and Killaraght are not available until 1873 although marriages start around 1844. I looked at the Tithe listings from the late 1820s and 1830s. If you search under Hanan you will note a number in Kilfree and Killaraght parishes. Possibly the father of James and Thomas would be listed if you knew his name. None are in Doon. Maybe the oldest son of James and Bridget was named after the father of James.

You can search www.askaboutireland.ie for the 1857 (Leitrim) and 1858 (Sligo) Griffiths Valuation head of household listings.

I don't know if there are any connection but the 1901 census has a good number of Hannons in Kilfree parish and Regans in Cloonclare parish in Co. Leitrim.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for responding to my request. I appreciate your suggestions and the effort you made on my behalf.

I was able to find 4 Hanan families from Killfree and Killaraght parishes from the Tithe Applotment Book records. These include Loughlin, Martin and Luke Hanan from Cloonyclare and Bartholomew Hanan from Knocknageeha. The first born son of "my" James Hannon was a Thomas, so no match with these 4 names. Maybe there is a way to trace these families forward.

I'm not having much success finding a way to narrow Grffith's Valuation listings for 1858 Sligo and if you can provide a link for me to get started I would appreciate it.

    Regards,

    Paul Hannon

    Paul:

The Failte Romhat site was down yesterday but now up. Below are links to the Griffiths for Kilfree and Killaraght.

The Tithes also has three Hanans in Killaraght although the parish was transcribed Killanaght. The names were Nat, Mal, and Thady.

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for the links! I've been reviewing all of the records for both counties.

My information that James Hannon was from "Doon West, Gurteen, Sligo Co." is not yet verified and I can't seem to source it. I based a lot on that snipet of information, however I'm thinking about the small liklihood of a James Hannon from Gorteen meeting a Bridget Regan from Lissinagroath (around 1850) They lived a long way away from one another. I started looking nearer to Lissinagroath for Hannon's that might live within a shorter walking distance.

The Tithes have two Hannon's in Leitrim Co: Thomas Hannon in Moneenegeer Townlands and Frank Hannon in Stradian Townlands, both West of Manorhamilton. Anyone going to Manorhamilton would pass Lissinagroath. I'm beginning to believe they could be from the same area and literally met "on the road." Any thoughts? There are close to 50 Hannon's from all parts of Sligo Co.. Only 2 total for Leitrim.

I looked up any and all Regan's in the Tithes and found about ten. The two relevant ones, Bryan and Peter are from Lissinagroath. It's very likely Bryan was the father of Bridget.

    Thanks,
    Paul

Below is the link to the Griffiths for Cloonclare parish. Only one Hannah, a Thomas in Moneenageer townland. That works with the oldest son of James.

  • I am trying to trace Mary A Hannon (great grand mother) born abt 1840's from Doon/Kilfree who married about 1869/1870 to Patrick Scanlon and lived in Quarryfield Bunninadden afterwards.

There was  another Mary Hannon & Patrick Scanlon who had a family in Kilfree from what I have found, which is not the right  couple.

I think this is the 1870 civil marriage record for Patrick and Mary. Both were from Doon.

  • Thanks Roger. I have another enquiry .

Was his mother Margaret Mc Cabe( Born 1805) from Taunagh Riverstown who was married to a James Scanlon his dad. Then there is the connection of a James and his son Martin born abt 1830  to the mill in Bunninadden.  IAll related but I am unable to make the right links between them all

Maybe you may be able to sort them for me. I am grateful for your input

I looked on the subscription site Roots Ireland and don't see a James Scnalon marriage to a McCabe. There is a gap in Riverstown marriage records from 1829-1836  https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0565
