I have been searching for any record of my great grandfather, Owen Rooney from Manorhamilton. Older family records list only approximate dates of 1809 (b) & 1875 (d). Supposedly his wife was a Bridget Rooney (nee MacDonald) fm the same area. They had 3 daughters, one of whom was named Katherine. All the daughters emigrated to the Boston area while in their teens with Katherine finding work as a maid in Cambridge, MA around 1850.

The RC chruch records for Cloonclare RC church start in 1841. I was unable to find any baptismal records for his children in Cloonclare church in Roots.

I looked at the 1857 Griffiths Valuation head of household listing for Cloonclare parish but there was no Owen Rooney. I looked at the Griffiths Valuation for the neighboring parish of Killasnet and there was an Owen Rooney in Diffreen townland. Not sure if this is your Owen.

Finally, I located the likely civil death index record for Owen. You can get a copy of this record from the General Register Office for around 4 euros. The record would show where the deceased lived, cause of death and the name of the informant. If you want to get this record, let me know and I will forward instructions.

  • Roger: Thanks again for the help. Yes, I believe I will need the record because it will be the only link or evidence of my maternal great-great grandfather. From that point, going back one more generation will most likely be very difficult since records become more scarce as you try to reach back into the late 1700's/early 1800's.

  • David:

Sorry for the delay. Go to this link.  https://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Apply-for-Certificates.aspx

Print out the death form. Fill it out to the best of your ability. Make sure you ask for a copy. Add the info from the index record above: year of death, registration number and volume and page number.

You have to mail the form to the address in Co. Roscommon but you can ask the GRO to e-mail the copy back to you.

  • Roger: Thanks for the hook-up to the instructions, very helpful. We'll see how long it takes for them to respond with an e-mail & photo-copied jpeg image. I'm sure we're not done yet given the lack of info on Owen's wife & family but knowing how tenuous it is to expect files/records fm this period to still exist, one shouldn't get their hopes too high.

  • Roger: FYI, I mailed the form to the Register's office 11 days ago and today received an e-mail with the document attached. They charged only $4.80. Pretty good responsiveness considering I had to snail mail it. Thx again....Dave
