We are planning a trip to Ireland in late May through mid June. Visiting Co. Leitrim will be the highlight of the trip. I long to visit my mother's homeland. My mother, Mary Scollan, was born 7/18/08 in Carreckrevagh a district of Manorhamilton, Drumhaire Barony, Cloonclaire Parrish. Her parents were Patrick Scollan & Bridget Cullen. Patrick's father was Owen. They were farmers. My mother's half brother Owen Scollan ran the farm after Partick died. I do not know if the farm was owned by Patrick / Owen or if they were tenant farmers.  I hope to visit the property wher my mother was raised. I am also hopeful of locating the school & church that she attended. She was Catholic. I would appreciate any & all info. Also, where would I go to obtain additional information when I arrive? Who would I contact?

Thank you, Helen

    Welcome to Ireland Reaching Out!

Below is the 1911 census record for the family and further below are the two civil marriage records for Patrick Scollan in 1900 and 1907 along with the names of the fathers of the bride and groom. Carrickrevagh is a townland about 15 kilometers to the east from the town of Manorhamilton. The Scollans owned the property.

  • Could you please tell me how to respond to someone else's posting? My 2nd cousin in California is on the Cullen message board (our maternal side of the family). I never met him/her & don't have an e-mail address. What do the ***'s  in the e-mail addresses mean? Are they blocked?

     Thank you, Helen

  • Hi!!!    I believe your mother (Mary Scollan/daughter of Patrick Scollan & Bridget Cullen) is closely related (by one or two degrees) to my grandmother (Brigid McMorrow/daughter of Hugh McMorrow & Bridget Cullen).  As such....we are very likely related.  It very well may be that your grandmother (Bridget Cullen) is my great grandmother.  I also have some vague recollection of a not so distant relative living in California.  I may have even contacted him somehow years ago.  I can't find the communication, but if it's the same gentleman...he had sent me a copy of a photo of the family farm/thatched roof cottage.

When are you planning your trip?  I look forward to hearing from you!!!

  • Hi Pam,

This is my 2nd attempt @ posting a reply to you, as my first didn't seem to go through. I hope that they both don't show up.

Thank you for contacting me!  Yes, Patrick & Bridget were my grandparents. Patrick had 3 wives. His first wife died. They had 1 son - Owen. Bridget was his 2nd wife. She died in childbirth. They had 4 children - Mary, James, Margaret & Michael. Mary, 7/18/08, the oldest, was my mother. Jim died before I was born. Margaret moved to California. Michael was my Godfather. They all immigrated to the US through Ellis Island.

You may have been in contact w/ one of Margaret's sons. I have that same photo, if its the one w/ the Cullen family in front of the home.

I live in Florida Where are you located?

  • Hi Helen!!!

I'm still a bit confused about the exact relation but...who cares.  :) Specifically, what I'm confused about is ...if Brigid Cullen died in childbirth (& this makes sense because I do recall my grandmother Brigid McMorrow was orphaned and lived with perhaps an uncle? until emigrating to U.S.)...then what??   Confusing.

I do know my great grandmother Brigid Cullen married a Hugh McMorrow which clouds things a bit further for me.  ??  Maybe Brigid was married before marrying Patrick?

I definitely spoke to the gentleman who lives in California.  I am in New Jersey.

When are you planning your trip?

  • I do not believe that there is a connection. My grandmother Briget Cullen was born 9-15-1884 & died in childbirth in 1914 @ age 28. She was not married before she married my grandfather Patrick Scollan @ age 22 in 1907. I cannot locate any connection to the name McMorrow. You may want to go to irishgeneology.ie & look under the civil records tab. There are several Bridet Cullens there. Sorry & good luck.

  • I still don't know if we a connection, but you never know. My grandmother Briget (Cullen) Scollan's brother Charles Cullen had a daughter Briget, but she married a McGowan. I do not believe that any of her other siblings had a daughter named Briget. The photo that I have of the Cullen thatched roof home has 7 people posing for the photo outside of it. There are 3 males & 4 females including my great grandparents. It may or may not be the same home. There are several Cullen's and their decendants that live in the Glenfarn and surrounding areas. I was only able to locate a second cousin when I visited. Our grandmothers were sisters. All those Cullens, and I was only related to one family. I cherish that connection though. Good luck in your search. Please, definetly let me know if you think that it is the same home & we can exchange email addresses & our photos of the home.

  • Hi,

not sure if I might be related or not. I have Schollard ancestors that were from Ireland, I just don’t know where. I have been told that their name could have been changed when they immigrated to the US. This is what I know as facts for my Schollard relatives:

Kate Louise Schollard is my Great Grandma she was born January 13, 1883 in Brooklyn, NY, USA to Patrick Schollard born October 20, 1850 Shanagolden, Limerick, Ireland and Catherine Reale. Patrick Schollard’s parents were James Schollard b. 1828 and Joanna Hastings b. 1818. I am not sure who James parents are, I have his father as possibly Patrick, but no confirmation. I have done ancestry dna , which led me to a match that had a lot of information on the Schollard’s in the US, it all gets fuzzy in Ireland though. Hopefully, we can either confirm or rule out any relationship. Sincerely, Dawn

  • Hello John,

Yes we do have a connection. Patrick Scollan had 3 wives. His first wife was Anne Regan. They had 1 son - Owen. His second wife was Bridget Cullen. They had 6 children - Mary (My mother, born in 1908. I was born when she was 48), James, Margaret, Michael, Delia & Partick. Delia & Patrick died in early infancy. His third wife was Bridget McManus. They had 1 daughter - Shelia. Sheila married Mr. Hope. I know that Sheila had a daughter Margaret that was adopted by Mr. Hope. Sheila had 5 siblings - Patrick, Francis, Sarah, Hugh & John. I have a photo of 4 of the 6. Bridget is in that photo. Francis is also in that photo. His son Francie and his son Michael live closeby. Francie showed us around the Scollan farm when we were there 2 years ago. He remembered it from when he was a boy. (We also went back last year. I can't get enough of Ireland. I very much would like to return again.) It was Hugh McManus who eventually wound up owning the farm. After his passing, his son James inhetited it. He is now renting it out to a neighboring sheep farmer.

    Keep in touch, Helen

  • Hello John,

I'm happy that we have connected.

If I'm correct, Margaret was your half sister, as she was adopted by Mr. Hope. I'm sorry, but I don't know your father's first name. I have photocopied photo of Margaret from 1990, when she visited Ireland. Francie McManus gave it to me. I believe that Francie would be your 2nd cousin. Also in that photo is Hugh McManus, his wife Vera and his son James. Since Hugh's passing, James now owns the Scollan farm.

I also have another photocopied photo that Francie gave me, although it's not the best quality, as the original was old. It's the one of your grandmother Bridget (Bea) and 3 of her 5 siblings.

In your last post, you said that (someone) talked about (them) often with great warmth. Were you referring to your grandmother or your mother? I would love to hear about any stories that you can recall. I would also love to share photos. I do not have any childhood photos of my mother or any photos of the farm from "back in the day". I only have photos of the Scollan home from when I recently visited. Do you happen to have a photo of Patrick Scollan? Your mother Sheila was my mother Mary's half sister. I have no photo of her either.

John, do you plan on visiting the area again. If so, when?

    Fondly, Helen

  • Hello John,

I hope that you are well.

I received a copy of email correspondence from 2009 between Allan/Wendy Davies & Maire Wells. They are a grandaughter & a great grandaughter of Patrick Scollan & his first wife Anne Regan Scollan. In that email they mentioned that they received information from Abigail Hope, your daughter. The information that was received was that Patrick Scollan's third wife, your grandmother, Bridget/Bea McManus Scollan, "threw the children from Patrick Scollan's previous marriage out", "as she did not like them". It is believed hat they went to stay with other family & eventually emigrated to America.

John, do you recall this story??? In one of your emails you said something about "her remembering them with great warmth" which I believe was probably your mother Sheila towards her siblings. I am interested in any story that you may have to share, whether happy or sad. I believe that things not shared will one day be lost.

Celia McHugh Quirke was your grandmother's niece.Celia's mother (?name) died when she was 6 weeks old. She was raised by your great aunt Sara McManus (? married name) since she was 4 years old. I do know that sometime after Patrick Scollan died, my mother Mary/Mollie Scollan was sent by your grandmother Bridget/Bea Scollan to England. She was sent there to help care for and to be a companion to Celia, as Celia was nearly crippled due to a bad knee infection. Celia and my mother would have been step cousins. My mother later returned to Ireland. I do not know if she remained on the Scollan farm or with other family, as the first entry of this email refrences, until she eventually moved to the states.

I would like to continue to correspond. Maybe Abigail would like to also.

    Warmest regards, Helen

  • Hello.  My name is Zack and currently reside in North Carolina.  My mother Carrol was researching her ancestors and came across this thread.  We noticed the comment regarding children, one of which residing in CA by the name of Margaret.  That was my grandmother who was born in 1910 and passed in 1995.  We saw the photo of Mary that was posted, and the family resemblance is striking.  My mother said she called her Aunt Molly and that she lived in Florida.  We also have a photo of the family sitting in front of the home with the thatched roof.  My mother had always mentioned about the relatives being scattered about, and was in awe when she saw this post.

  • Hello Zack. I'm sorry that I missed your post. I was away in July, but I should have caught it when I returned. Anyway, I'll now share some Scollan history. You may be aware of this info or not. Anyway here goes.....

My grandfather was Patrick Scollan (1872-1921). He was a farmer. He was married 3 times.

-His 1st marriage was to Anne Regan (1880-1906). She died in the Manorhamilton workhouse at about age 26. They had 1 child, Owen (1902-1963).

-His 2nd marriage was to my grandmother Bridget Cullen (1884-1914). She also died when she was young at age 29 from "Pulmonary TB". They had 6 children. My mother Mary was the oldest (1908-1978), then James (1909-1960), Margaret (1910-1995), Michael (1911-1969), Delia (1912-1913) & Patrick (1913-1914). Delia & Patrick died in infancy @ 29 days old & 3 months old respectively. Bridget died 2 days before baby Patrick. Documentation of her death states that she had TB for 9 months prior to her death.

-His 3rd marriage was to Bridget McManus (1880-?). They had 1 child, Sheila (1918-2013). She was raped when she was 22 & had a daughter Margaret. Margaret was raised in an orphanage until Shelia married & her husband adopted Margaret.

-The Scollan & Cullen homes are still standing. The roof of the Scollan home is gone & there are trees growing inside of it. The property is now owned by the McManus family & is being rented out to a neighboring sheep farmer. The Cullen home was upgraded in the 60's. It has lost the charachter that it had probably had back in the day. It's in poor shape.

Well I can't think of anything else of much importance. If you or your nother have any questions feel free to reach out & if I can answer them if I will. BTW, I live in Florida.

    Helen

As Margaret Scollan was your grandmother, your mother would be my 1st cousin and you would be my 2nd cousin. I'm happy to have this connection. Does your family have any photos of the Scollen home other than the one that I posted or photos of realatives from back in the day? When you mentioned having a photo of the family in front of the thatched roof cottage, were you referring to the Cullen or the Scollan home? The one that I have is of the Cullen home. I'm just wondering if there are any photos in existance that I don't have.
