Daniel F Boyle was born in Kiltoghert, Leitrim about 1844.  His parents may have been John Boyle (born abt 1815) and Bridget.  I believe that he sailed from Liverpool to Boston in 1866 aboard the Enoch Train.

In Worcester, Massachusetts, he met and married Elizabeth Farrell perhaps in 1869.  They had Mary Elizabeth in 1870, John Francis in 1872, Thomas P in 1873, Daniel Francis in 1877, and Elizabeth Florence in 1879.  Mary Elizabeth is my wife's maternal great grandmother.  All of the Boyle children listed above were born in Worcester.

My wife wants to confirm that Daniel F Boyle was born in Kiltoghert, Leitrim and would like to learn more about the family.

Thanks for the help,

Dan

  • Hi,

I have corresponded with a couple of other people who descended from Daniel Boyle of Worcester, Ma.  They are descended from his son Thomas who was a doctor in Newark, NJ.

My great great grandmother was Mary Boyle or Boylan who was from Kiltoghert, Leitrim and was born in about 1814.  She was married to William Brewin in about 1835.  While in Ireland, they had at least 3 children.  In about 1845-47, William worote to his brother who lived in Underhill, Vermont begging for help to get to America.  William left Mary behind and arrived in Quebec in the spring of 1847 and from there got to Burlington, VT.  At some point thereafter, he walked to Marlboro, Massachusetts.  Many Irish men in Underhill spent the winter months working in Worcester, Ma.  Within 2/3 years, William sent for Mary and the 3 children.  They had 2 more children before May died on August 24, 1854.  Her grave indicates she was a member of the parish of Kiltoghert, Leitrim.

Numerous sources and family tradition places this family near Drumshanbo, Leitrim.  The letter written begging for help was postpaid in Drumshanbo.  Vermont relatives place their family at Cornacranaghy townland while the family of William's sister, Mary Brewin Flynn lived at Moheracreevy Glebe. (Her children and grandchildren moved to Worcester).   William's father is most likely the Brian Brum who appears in the 1833 Tithe Applotment list for Drumkeelan More townland.  Brewin as it is spoken with an Irish accent can get mangled.

Over the years many descendants of Brian Brewin have put together lists of descendants.  Only one has a sheet about Mary Boyle.  Her father is listed as John Boyle and her mother is Grace Lynch.  When she died, her father is listed as George Bolton and her mother is Grace.  On the list, there is a ??? for her brother's name but three children appear.  Daniel, Mary and Patrick.  Daniel's children are: Mary, John (a priest), Thomas and Elizabeth.  I tracked them to Worcester through John the priest.  His obituary indicates his family was part of the founding of St. John's Parish, Worcester.

Irish in Marlboro had no church and only a visiting priest until about 1855.  Before then they walked to Worcester or Framingham, Ma on Saturday night for church on Sunday morning.

When Daniel married Elizabeth Farrell, his name is recorded as Boylen.  He also boarded with a Bridget Boylan whose husband was listed as George.  Later, he and his family lived right down the block from this Bridget.

I also noticed that a Patrick Boyland joined the 9th Reg in the Civil War from Marlboro and died in the war.  Not sure if he has any connection.

If you have any other information, I would love to know more.
