I am writing to you from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have been doing my family history for years, but I have never been able to trace my Irish ancestry.

My brick wall are my 3x great grandparents Thomas McConnell & Mary McHugh McConnell. They married Killanummery 22 Jan 1846, and immigrated to the United States in 1851.

I have discovered they may have came from Inishmagrath and possibly the parish of Drumkeeran based on advertisement that Thomas submitted looking for siblings. (See Attached)
Image removed.

I am trying to get proof of their parents and siblings and put together their families.

I found the following McConnells in Griffiths and I suspect one of them is Thomas father…but I have no proof.

Mc Connell      Michael             Gortnasillagh West                    Inishmagrath     Leitrim
Mc Connell      Peter               Gortnasillagh West                    Inishmagrath     Leitrim

Are there any records you can recommend?

I thank you so much for your time. I hope you have a very happy holiday and someday I wish to come visit

  • Carrie: Happy Holidays to you also. Your attachment did not come thru. We have been having problems with attachments and we are checking out the issue. I checked the 1834 Tithe listings for the parish of Inishmagrath and found two records of interest. There was a Peter McConnel and a Patt McConnel listed in Gortnasillagh Lower townland. Maybe Peter was the father of Thomas? Did Thomas have any sons named Peter or Patrick? As you likely know the RC parish of Drumkeeran/Inishmagrath has records for late 1834-1839 and then there is a gap until 1881. I did find a death record in 1874 for a Bridget McConnell age 80 and the informant was a Peter McConnell. She lived in Gortnasillagh. Bridget was likely the widow of Peter or Patt. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… The informant Peter dies in 1898. Wife Jane was the informant. See second record. https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_retu… I did not find Jane McConnell in the 1901 census. I did find a Margaret McConnell in Gortnasillagh and maybe Jane and Margaret are the same person. http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Leitrim/Drumkeeran/Gor… Let me know if you have any questions.
