John Roche and Catherine Harold had four children, one being Mary-Anne Roche born 1760. Mary-Anne married a John Meade (son of Thomas Meade and Eleanor Rochfort) in 1785 in St Mary's Church, Athunklard Street, Limerick. They had eight children, one being a daughter Catherine (Kate) Meade who at some stage of her life 'married' a Mr Fitzmaurice. Their daughter Mary Agnes arrived in Australia in about 1852 stating her maiden name was 'Williamson' then 'Fitzmaurice'. She seems confused as to her maiden name.  John Roche's brothers were Philip and Stephen Roche. Philip Roche is responsible for building The Granary in Limerick.  Is anyone out there related to the Meade and Roche families of Limerick?

  • I notice there are 8 Roches (& no Meades) in Abbeyfeale, Limerick in the irish phone book (www.118.ie) so if you don't get any responses you might want to drop them a line

  • The Roches are well documented in  Limerick. The Meades moved all over the place including Mexico. I am in Australia.

  • Not sure if I can give you any real help. But I'm interested in Meade and Fitzmaurice - my mother was Meade and her mother was Fitzmaurice. My Meade ancestors came to the parish of Duagh prior to 1824. The general belief is that they came from Newcastlewest, Co. Limerick. I don't know if they were connected to the Meades in the city of Limerick.

In the National Archives there is a will of a Mary Meade of Limerick City from the year 1747. The will mention's her husband but does not give his name. She had a son John who inherited the greater part of her estate. She also had a daughter and a grand-daughter both named Susan Apjohn. (the grand-daughter was still under 21 and unmarried.) The executors of the will were Arthur Roche and Bryan McMahon both of Limerick.

At the time of Griffith's Valuation (c. 1850) the landlord for the townland of Leitrim East (Moyvane parish, Co. Kerry) was a Stephen Roche of Limerick. The agent was John Fitzmaurice who lived in Leitrim East. He is one of my direct ancestors.

These pieces if information are probably not relatable to anything you have. But no harm in putting them out there.

  • Hi Tom -sorry for the delay in responding. Anything is possible with my GG Grandmother. My great grandmother's marriage notice which appeared on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald  in 1883 stated she was the great grandaughter of James Fitzmaurice and great Grand niece of Lord Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice Marquis of Lansdown and Earl of Kerry.  Its a big lie to tell and have published on the front page of the major Sydney newspapers.  But I've not made any headway in proving this.  The rest of the notice and relatives mentioned therein I have proven correct.

A Stephen Roche was a Gx4 Uncle and brother of John Roche my Gx4 Grandfather. I think he was founder of the Provincial Bank of Ireland.

Mary Agnes Fitzmaurice, my GG Grandmother's death certificate says her father was Henry James Fitzmaurice , an Army Captain of HM 3rd Buffs. Again I have not been able to find him.

So if perchance you come across any of these names, please let me know. Ballybunion House in Kerry is also mentioned.

I am truly grateful for your response.

    Cheers

    Helen
