I am trying to trace the parents and any siblings of my 2nd great grandafather, Patrick Keelan who definitely came from Adare. He was born around 1828. Obviously I cannot find his birth recrrds as this was evidently before official records were kept. Patrick married my second great grandmoher, Johanna Fennessy, (who was from Kilfinny) is Croagh in November 1850. Their marriage was witnessed by a Michael Kelly and Catherine Russell. Patrick and Johanna left Limerick to live in Liverpool and so are not buried in Ireland, but in Liverpool. If anyone knows for certain that this Patrick was definitely a sibling or son of someone in their tree or can shed any light on his wider family, please let me know. I am trying to trace my Limerick roots. Thank you. A clue may be that Patrick joined the police when he arrived in Liverpool and family heresay has it that he came from a family who were in the Irish police. Does that ring any bells with anyone? Thanks.

  • Hi Anne, I was quite excited to see your post. My grandmother was Catherine Fennessy, born in Adare in 1870 to James Fennessy and Catherine McEniry. She was the youngest of 9 siblings and came to Australia in the 1890's. Many of her siblings went to England. Her father, James died in Adare in 1889. Her mother, Catherine died in 1901. The 1901 shows that Catherine in Kilfinny with a granddaughter. I was wondering if your Johanna was a sister of James, he was born about 1819. I'm on ancestry.com. If you'd like to see my family tree send a request and I'd be happy to invite you as a guest..... Odgers Family Tree. Best wishes, Maree.

  • Hi Anne,

If your Patrick Keelan was catholic, have you tried the Parish Registers.  A few years ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to actually sit in the parish office and look through their registers (long before they went on line).  We were able to find his father's baptism record from 1892, along with that of his aunts.  In additon, we found records of cousins baptized in the early 1900s which led us to actually finding and eventually conctacting his only living cousin who was 94 at the time!  The registers go back into the 1700s and early 1800s.  Good luck.

  • Thanks Peg. Yes he was a Catholic. As such I had no trouble finding his marriage details. He and Johanna were married in Croagh. I could not find Patrick's birth record as I understand it predated official records being kept. Very frustrating! My hope is that someonw somewhere has a piece of family history information that will place Patrick within his wider family context and the same with Johanna.Sometimes all we need is one or two little jigsaw pieces and that's it. Thanks very much for replying.Much appreciated.
