Hi,

I am trying to trace the family of my Mother whose maiden name was 'Sheehan.Ireland Reaching Out - www.irelandxo.comShe always told us that her Grandfather was William Sheehan from Askeaton in Co. Limerick. He married Mary Ann Ruttle (a Protestant) and both are buried in the Catholic Church burial ground in Askeaton. Her Father was Daniel Sheehan, believed to have been the youngest son and the names of his siblings (as many as she told us) Joseph Sheehan who was believed to have migrated to Bristol in the UK. Also Katherine, Bridget, Alice, Polly, and possibly Marian.

Of William Sheehan's wife's family we have no information what-so-ever apart from her name: Mary Ann Ruttle and the fact that she was a 'Protestant'.

If you can help me to verify any of this information and/or assist me in my search for any family members I would be most grateful

  • the ruttle is a paletine name,

the paletine families, arrived in england,

during the reign of queen ann of england.

    some of the families migrated,

    later from england to ireland.

you may hve to go back 6 to 8 generations,

to find the link to the paletines.

  • Hi John,

Following your comments, I have looked up the Palatine Museum at Rathkeale on the internet and left a request for more information on their website.

Thank you so much for your time and interest....without your comments I would have known nothing about the Palatines and their reasons for migration from Germany. I have to say, having been brought up as a Catholic, I was somewhat bemused to discover the Methodist link.

    Thanking you once again.

    Kind regards

  • Hi Suzie,
I am descended from the Ruttle's of Ireland. Did you have any luck finding anything on Mary Ann Ruttle and her family? I would be very interested in anything. I have a lot on the Ruttle/Ruckle's if he could help you.
    Cheers
    Gavin

  • Thank you for posting this question.  It answered a long running discussion in our family about whether my grandfather Meredith Laurence Ruttle was Irish or German.  My grandparents divorced in the 1930's and he died in 1950 so we never got a chance to ask him.  My mother did some research about 20 years ago and determined that his grandfather George Ruttle had come from Ireland, but that was mostly from discussions with her aunts and uncles in Kincardine Ontario.

This shows that both sides of the discussion were correct, the Ruttles are both Irish and German, and yes, they were Methodists.
