I am descended from 5 Ahern brothers who were involved in the Whiteboys.

I have some information on the family and considering the time period, grateful.

But I am sure there is more out there, and descendants with whom I would love to make contact.

John, Murtagh, Michael, Matthias, James m Honora (Eleanor) Collins and had 9 children between 1801 and 1825.

Also a brother Patrick 'who turned King's Evidence' against his brother.

Convicted of treason, only two brothers made it to Australia in 1802 - Murtagh and Michael.

My sister and I will be in Bruff - staying at the Old Bank on June 10, 2016.

Wanted to look at Manister/Monaster = Burnt Cross, The Grange, Fedamore, Croom, Caherconlish, in Bruff - the old Gaol and Andrew O'Kelly's Public House? Parish Church Graves, St Peter of Alexandria, Chapel Lane adj Crawford Lane. Perhaps the Boland Grave.

If time, Lough Gur Heritage Centre and the Ag and Cultural Museum 'Old Irish Ways' - does this make sense?

Anything would help - we are so far away and will be visiting for such a short time! robynhogan@hotmail.com     Thank you, Robyn

  • I am interested in more information about "Andrew O'Kelly's Public House." in Bruff.

My great-great grandfather Michael Kelly was born in Bruff. His father was Andrew Kelly. I found a death certificate for an Andrew Kelly, 6 Jun 1866, Nelson Street, Limerick No. 4. His occupation was listed as "Victualler." Informant: Michael Kelly.

    Thanks for any information.

    Hi Diana

There is a reference to Kelly's Pub in Bruff, Limerick in the UK Parliamentary Papers, Secret Commission Reports late 1790's. This is available through the National Library of Australia, not sure where you are, but sound American?

I was in Bruff last year and have a photograph of the Pub. which is still Kellys and located in the main street - you could probably find it on Google Street Maps, or send me your email and I will try to find my photo!

    Regards, Robyn

  • Hi Robyn,

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I am American. I live in Washington State.

My great great grandfather Michael Kelly was born in 1808 in Bruff. If the death record I have is of his father Andrew Kelly, he would have been born in 1776. Andrew Kelly would have been in his 20's in the late 1790's.

I would be interested in the address and photo of the Pub...The photo you attached appears to be of a Hunt Museum?
