Hello from Australia! I wonder if anyone else is researching these families, or may be able to help me find my ancestors? Michael Loughnan (abt 1825-1879) and Johanna Ryan (abt 1833-1879) were both from Bruff, and married at St Patricks Well on 31 July 1857. Soon after, they emmigrated to Australia. They may have had two children, Catherine and John, both around 1858 or 9, in Bruff before they left, and they were in Australia by 1862. I would love to know if there are other members of these families in Bruff or if anyone has any insights into the parentage, I've had no luck with the usual sources. With grateful thanks, Jess Miller.

  • Thank you very much! Some additional information that has come my way is that Michael's parents were John and Kate (Catherine?) Loughnane, born around 1800, while Johanna's father's name was John Ryan. In the marriage entry the couple is listed as being from Kilballyowen, near Bruff, this appears to be a small area so it may be that the Loughnanes there constitute a single family. It isn't as common a name as Ryan! I have found some grave inscriptions with similar names from the area, but have not been able to ascertain whether they are connected to my family. Appreciate any help at all! Thank you!

Sorry you did not hear back from someone local. I'm just returning from holidays.

I searched on Roots Ireland for a baptismal record for Michael Loughnane around 1827 and there was no record.

By the way, here is a link to the Bruff parish register from 1808-1881. http://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0870

I also searched for Johanna Ryan with father John and there were ten baptismal records with that ntaken an autosomal DNA test?

Please consider adding your ancestor stories to our XO Chronicles site.

  • Dear Roger - thank you so very much for your help, that is wonderful! I will check the Bruff parish register, fingers crossed there is a Loughnane or two there! I have found a lot of Johanna Ryans too, it looks like the test must be my logical next step. Thanks so much for taking the time to help me, I hope you had a great holiday!!! Warm regards, Jess
