Looking for info on John Joseph Devaney (June 1846 - July 1890). "Native of Meanus Parish of Bruff Co Limerick"

I think he came to US in 1864/1865

His wife, Julia Fitzgerald (1844-1891), was a "Native of the Ballygrinnan Parish of Croom County, Limerick. Her parents were Thomas (b 1807) and Mary (b. 1805)

I think Julia and John were married in 1860 and came over together in 1864/1865. Here is the relevant portion of their gravestone, which is in Holy Cross Cemetary in Brooklyn NY

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, thanks for your message and  interest in Ireland Reaching Out.

The Irishtimes website is a great source of information for those interested in their family tree. It gives information on what records are actual available for specific counties and where to find them. The link to the Co. Limerick section is here:

    http://www.irishtimes.com/ancestor/browse/counties/munster/index_li.htm#Limerick

No complete census records survive prior to 1901 so one of the best sources of information for the 1800s are land records. As John was born in 1846 there may be some record of him in Griffith's Valuation which dates from 1848 to 64.  This can be found at the following link:

    http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/

With regards to their emigration, do you know much about it? Why they left Ireland? Which port they arrived in?Generally more information was given at the port of arrival rather than the port of departure. If you knew which city they arrived at this could be a good place to find more information.

If they arrived in New York some good websites for finding Immigration records, also known as "ship passenger arrival records," are the following sites:

    http://www.ellisisland.org/search/passSearch.asp

     http://www.castlegarden.org/

    http://www.archives.gov/research/immigration/

If you would like to find out some more information about where John and Julia grew up, the Limerick County Library website may be of use to you. This can be found here:

I hope this helps. Remember to post as much information as you can with regard to the people you are researching. The more information you post, the more likely it is that one of our volunteers will be able to advise or assist you. Also include information concerning which sources you may have already used so others may further your search.

    Kind regards,
